This listing is for a handmade Seeress/Shaman Ritual hat. Made using the York stitch, in 100% White Wool from the Drops Snow range. This is a stock made item.

This type of hat is an interpretation created by Nidavellnir, based on historical sources, the Northern Scandinavian and Icelandic evidence for Ritual leaders and ritual practice during the early medieval period (c.700-1100 AD).
The covering of the eyes enables the shaman to commune more spiritually in the different realms of spirit work, relying on their other senses and immersing themselvesin their task. There are 9 plaits on the hat to represent the 9 realms in norse mythology and belief. The tablet braid is long and grounding, to keep the shaman intouch with the present.

Around head: 22" (56.5cm)
Depth of hat: 5.5" (14.5cm)

Due to the nature of the York stitch being quite bouncy, there is a bit of stretch in the hat, so will stretch around the head by another 1" if necessary.

Nalbinding is the historical name used to describe the earliest form of wool craft that predates modern knitting and crochet. There are many different cultural types of nalbinding; Nidavellnir specialises in this craft during the Viking Age in the British Isles, North Atlantic, Scandinavia and Northern Europe.
