Vintage from the 19th century

This is a stunning 19th c. puppet head hand carved from wood with a coating of gesso and paint. He is mounted on a custom made black wooden stand. The head alone measures 8 1/4" tall by 4 1/4" wide, ear to end of nose and 3 1/2" ear to ear. The stand is 9" tall with a 5 3/4" diameter base and is turned black-painted wood. The jester originally would have been mounted on a stick covered with fabric. There are some small chips, notably on his right ear (see last photo) and the blue on his hat shows wear. He is original with no restoration, and is most likely German or French in origin. Provenance: Tom Jewett and a private collector.
