Travel back to the 1980's with this original Sinclair ZX Spectrum converted to work as a fully functional USB keyboard.

Inside I have a USB controller board which transforms the Spectrum's keyboard into a USB keyboard. This will work anywhere a normal USB keyboard would, most laptop and desktop PCs, and some tablets. No software is required to run on the PC end, just plug in and go.

The Spectrum has 40 rubber keys, but through use of 'Caps Shift' and 'Symbol Shift' keys, I have mapped most of the main keys you would need.

Two modes are available, the default is to map they keys to whatever is printed on the Spectrum keys. The alternative is direct mapping where each key press is passed directly to the PC, which is better for emulators, or if you want to remap the keys in software.

I have recently redesigned the controller board, and the mode (direct / remapped) can now be changed by pressing a button on the rear of the Spectrum case. Alternatively, it can be fixed at direct or remapped mode, if you prefer.

I've also added a click sound when a key is pressed. The original Spectrum did this, and it does make it easier to type. This is disabled in the direct mode as the emulators also makes the click sound.

I repair and refurbish a lot of classic 1980's computers, but every now and then, I get ones that cannot be economically repaired. This is a way of giving them a new life. I only make these from dead computers, no working Spectrum's were harmed in the making of these keyboards!

Please note, these are built to order, so you it won't be the exact unit pictured here. The original units are 30 years old, so there may be the odd mark or scratch, but nothing too bad.

Other computers are listed in my shop, and I hope to list more in the future, please contact me for further information or requests.

This was reviewed in Micro Mart magazine issue 1352. It was awarded a score of 9/10.
