THE CAMBRIDGE STOCKING: AN EASY HOLIDAY STOCKING PATTERN WITH LOTS OF OPTIONS
Would you like to sew some holiday stockings? These stockings make lovely gifts or decorations and are quick and easy to make using my step-by-step instructions with lots of colour photographs.
This is a PDF sewing pattern for immediate download for a holiday stocking in three sizes. The large and medium size stockings, filled with gifts, would be a delight for any child to receive, and the small one could be used both for smaller gifts and as a holiday decoration.
The stocking front can be made either with simple patchwork squares or from a single fabric. The stocking has a plain back, wadding (batting) front and back, lining, and a hanging loop. The stocking may be made with the toe pointing either left or right, and can be either quilted or left unquilted. The contrasting binding and pom-pom trim give a smart festive finish to the top edge of the stocking. Don't like making binding? I've got you covered because instructions are also included for making the stocking without the binding and trim. The stocking has a nice-shaped foot with a wider leg for easier access.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE PATTERN?

DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
This pattern is suitable for a confident beginner. For the patchwork version, it would be helpful to have a little patchwork experience, but basic instructions are given. For the patchwork, use of a rotary cutter, gridded ruler, and cutting mat is recommended. Alternatively, you could start by making a stocking from a single piece of fun fabric. And if fusible fleece is used, quilting is optional. The binding and trim may be sewn on either by hand or machine, or omitted altogether.
MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES NEEDED:
• Quilting cotton for the exterior and lining
• Low-loft fusible fleece (Vlieseline H630 or Pellon 987F) or low-loft cotton wadding
• Pom-pom trim (optional)
• Other supplies: thread, sewing machine with regular foot (optional: ¼” foot, walking foot, and free-motion quilting foot); zipper foot if attaching pom-pom trim by machine; quilter’s cutting mat, gridded ruler, and rotary cutter; pins ; Clover “Wonder” binding clips or equivalent brand; water-erasable marker; small sharp scissors, fabric shears; utility scissors; seam ripper (optional but useful); computer printer and printing paper for printing the stocking templates; and if basting non-adhesive wadding instead of fusible fleece, you'll need either basting spray, small safety pins or needle and thread.
