The Maya pattern takes its influence from my Central American mother and family. It is a cap sleeve dress or top that is designed to hang well from the shoulders and have a wide fit from the bust down, much like a traditional Guatemalan Huipil. It is intended to be playful and fun and can really showcase an amazing fabric, whether that be a bold print or luscious fibre.
Although relatively simple in design, the variations are endless and there are several lengths to choose from ranging from a cropped top to a knee length dress with a hip length top and shorter dress length in-between. Other variants include a straight or shaped hem, button or plain front as well as an option for a sash belt.
The construction is straight forward and creates a tidy finish as you work through the instructions leaving no raw edges in sight.
FABRIC SUGGESTIONS - Light to medium weight woven fabric.

This pattern would be suitable for an advanced beginner as there are elements to take your time over, such as the top stitched facings and the button plackets, but there is nothing too crazy and nothing that can't be completed on a standard sewing machine.

Simple and clear instructions. The top turned out perfect (I sewed the top with curved hem both front and back)! Am gonna sew the dress version next!
I made the plain-fronted top version. It's the perfect shape and I love it! I'm not super experienced and found the instructions a bit minimal, I had to read them a few times to understand them. But I got there in the end with a bit of You Tube and no major mistakes. Otherwise a fantastic pattern!
I usually draft my own patterns for myself and family, but I was so intrigued by the simple and chic silhouette of this pattern from a podcast I watched that I purchased it to make life easier. With a couple of my usual personal adjustments, I now have a great basic warm weather top. Pattern is beautifully drafted and directions are well written. Would highly recommend to any level of sewing experience. Thank you!
Thank you! This was really fun to sew! I really like how the fit is loose, but not too baggy. Also, it's great to have a pattern with so few seams, so I can use a fun print and not stress about pattern matching :)
