Cornucopia was designed as a colour experiment; I wanted to explore the effect of subtle tonal and saturated colour in the same blanket.
I started with a skein of bright yellow “Skein Queen” and added extra colours that worked together from my stash.
After the first few rows of motifs of the blanket I realised I had chosen fruity natural colours and so named it Cornucopia, the mythological “Horn of Plenty” which overflows with fruits and flowers.
The more I look at the blanket the more fruits I can see – strawberries, cherries, apples, mangos, limes, kiwi’s, oranges YARN
SIZE
Cornucopia can also be made with a DK yarn, I recommend a DK with 240 to 260 metre per 100g
The measurements below are for both yarn weights, sizes are approximate.
4 ply/Fingering - measures 115 cm/45” square
DK - measures 170 cm/65” square
YARN
I made Cornucopia with scraps of yarn left over from other projects, plus some skeins of Skein Queen hand dyed 4 ply/Fingering yarn.
I probably used 20 or 30 colours, which can be divided up into 10 base colours.
But you can also make the blanket using just the 10 base colours.
If you prefer to make the blanket from full skeins of yarn I recommend 10 skeins of any of “Skein Queen’s” 4 ply/fingering (400 metres per 100 gms).
Cornucopia contains Enchant (70% Alpaca/20% Silk/10% Cashmere), Selkino ( 70% Merino/30% Silk) Lustrous (50% Merino/50% Silk), Luminosity (100% Silk)
Other suitable yarns include Madeline Tosh (Merino light), Drops Alpaca, Dream by Colour - Jilly, Cascade Heritage Silk. The yarn does not have to be the same manufacturer or fibre blend just as long as they are the same meterage. I like to mix the yarn types as they add an extra dimension to the look of the finished blanket if they are slightly different textures.
YOU WILL ALSO NEED
Crochet hook in size 3 mm, or size needed for your tension.
A tapestry needle for sewing in ends.
COLOUR
The colour placement of the blanket is completely random, so you will need a collection of colours rather than specific colours. Choose fruity colours and make sure you choose a mix of saturated and subtle colours.
This is the colour selection I used is.......
3 x Greens – Lime, Apple & Kiwi, 2 x Reds – Strawberry & Cherry, 2 x Yellows – Lemon & Banana,
1 x Purple – Grape, 2 x Oranges – Mango & Tangerine
This pattern contains the following…..
Detailed colour and yarn recommendations
Written and charted Motif instructions in UK and US terms.
Step by step construction charts
Full coloured layout chart.
