Description

I designed these collars as coat savers for my long-coated Standard Poodles. They may suit other long-coated dogs too, but please be aware they are not intended to be worn constantly at home and won't protect the coat if used in this way. For short-coated dogs, a flat collar is probably a better choice. Matching leads are available -- please see Twill and Chevron leads (separate listings).

The collar is made from beautiful Italian vegetable-tanned leather sourced from cattle in EC countries and rolled and handstitched with strong linen thread from France in such a way as to give a completely circular cross-section with a smooth burnished seam that stays on the inside of the collar, to minimise chafing and damage to your dog's neck hair. The solid brass fittings are made by a family business in the Midlands, and their weight helps to keep them at the front of the dog's neck to reduce having to rummage through coat to attach a lead.

Sizes tailored for poodles. No oversized collars with trailing straps nor oversmall collars with half the part in contact with the dog's neck hair ending up as flat strap!

I use these collars daily on all my own poodles and have never had one fail, but if you have a very large strong dog who is difficult on lead, I make a tougher 'Samson' rolled collar (separate listing) and would recommend this instead.

CUSTOM OPTIONS please write any custom requests as a note on your order, or send a message if you are unsure!
Most of the colours can be made with matching stitching if you prefer. The standard widths for the different sizes are listed below, but they can be made with different widths. An alternative low-profile brass buckle is also available, as some people prefer a lighter and less conspicuous buckle. I can also make the collar with a quick-release buckle in either 3/4" (various colours) or 1/2" (black only) strap width. Quick release buckles can be helpful for people living with conditions such as arthritis and are more likely to fail should the collar become caught on something. Quick-releases are not recommended for dogs who pull hard or where the dog would in danger were the collar to fail, but they can work well for people who tend to use a slip lead or harness rather than attaching the lead directly to the collar. A properly fitted collar that is removed when the dog cannot be supervised is also much less likely to become caught and injure a dog than a loose poorly-fitting one. When ordering a quick-release collar, it is important to measure your dog's neck very carefully (see below) and include this with your order as unfortunately it's not possible to make these collars adjustable. Anything else please ask as I've made rolled collars that can hold various things, such as a remote-controlled vibrating training aid for a deaf dog.

PLEASE READ SIZING. I'm happy to refund or exchange collars that don't fit, but measuring carefully will save time and carbon footprint! :-):
STANDARD 14-16" (3/4" collar width at buckle)
MEDIUM 12-14" (5/8" collar width at buckle)
MINIATURE 10-12" (5/8" collar width at buckle)
TOY 8-10" (1/2" collar width at buckle) Toy size can be made smaller if required -- please get in touch.
LARGE 16-18" (3/4" collar width at buckle)
The sizes listed are to fit the neck circumferences in inches -- measure your dog's neck without leaving 'finger room' at the point you would like the collar to sit. If your dog has a long coat, make a parting in the hair around the neck so you can measure closely where the collar will go. Please don't add anything to this measurement or try to measure any of your dog's existing collars, and please always measure your dog as not all poodles fit into their typical size bracket, and a sturdy toy might need a miniature size collar, for example, and some very gracile standards might fit best in the miniature size! Unless you request otherwise, the collars have the strap width and buckle size listed. Collars might feel a bit stiff and tight at first, but they will mould to the shape of the dog's neck with body warmth and use. If your dog's neck measurement is between sizes, it is recommended to use the larger size.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Please examine collars regularly and do not use any collar that is damaged or showing signs of abnormal wear. Collars should ALWAYS be removed when not needed for your dog's safety as well as to avoid wear and tear on the collar and the dog's coat from scratching. Collars can be polished once a month or so using white saddle soap or other suitable uncoloured leather cleaner to keep them clean and looking their best. Vegetable tanned leather can stretch slightly if it becomes saturated with water, so if your dog is going swimming it should probably wear a different collar for this activity. If the collar does get very wet, avoid attaching a lead if possible, and remove the collar as soon as it is safe to do so. If it is wet with dirty/salty water or misshapen, rinse thoroughly with clean water and squeeze back into shape and leave to dry completely before putting it back on. When grooming your dog, remove the collar before applying detangling spray or any other grooming product, and allow the dog's coat to dry before putting the collar back on. Please do be aware that leather is a natural product and there can be small marks and imperfections and slight variations in colour -- many people feel this gives leather items their own character, and is simply evidence that the hide's previous owner lived a full and active life. :-)

SUSTAINABILITY
Most of the items I make are recyclable/biodegradable. When your collar reaches the end of its useful life, remove the brass hardware and the polyester rope core, which can both be recycled. The collar can then be returned to the earth by putting it in the compost bin. Items are posted in recycled cardboard packaging. Please recycle or reuse this.

NOTA BENE
Some people with light-coated dogs have found the 'Poppy' collar can stain the dog's coat if it worn when damp. I have informed the tannery of this, but for this reason I only recommend buying this colour if you have a dark-coloured dog. The other colours so far as I'm aware don't do this, but if you have a light-coloured poodle and it's crucial that this not happen, for example if you are showing your dog, the ivory leather is undyed and it's probably best to use this colour. Please be aware as above that if leather items are consistently getting wet it can cause the leather to deteriorate. These collars are not designed for swimming in or for dogs who live outdoors. If a properly-cared-for collar develops a workmanship fault during the lifetime of your dog, I will do my best to repair it for no charge (buyer pays postage costs).
