Description

A beautiful image from NASA's Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescopes shows the Orion nebula in an explosion of infrared, ultraviolet and visible-light colors. It was "painted" by hundreds of baby stars on a canvas of gas and dust, with intense ultraviolet light and strong stellar winds as brushes.

At the heart of the image is a set of four monstrously massive stars, collectively called the Trapezium. These are approximately 100,000 times brighter than our sun. Their community can be identified as the yellow smudge near the center of the composite.

The swirls of green were revealed by Hubble's ultraviolet and visible-light detectors. They are hydrogen and sulphur (or sulfur in the US) gases heated by intense ultraviolet radiation from the Trapezium's stars.

Wisps of red, also detected by Spitzer, indicate infrared light from illuminated clouds containing carbon-rich molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. On Earth, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are found on burnt toast and in automobile exhaust.

Additional stars in Orion are sprinkled throughout the image in a rainbow of colors. Spitzer exposed infant stars deeply embedded in a cocoon of dust and gas (orange-yellow dots). Hubble found less embedded stars (specks of green) and stars in the foreground (blue). Stellar winds from clusters of newborn stars scattered throughout the cloud etched all of the well-defined ridges and cavities.

Located 1,500 light-years away from Earth, the Orion nebula is the brightest star in the sword of the hunter constellation. The cosmic cloud is also our closest massive star-formation factory, and astronomers suspect that it contains about 1,000 young stars.

The Orion constellation can be seen in the autumn and winter night skies from northern latitudes. The constellation's nebula is invisible to the unaided eye, but can be resolved with binoculars or small telescopes.

This image is a false-color composite, in which light detected at wavelengths of 0.43, 0.50, and 0.53 microns is blue. Light with wavelengths of 0.6, 0.65, and 0.91 microns is green. Light of 3.6 microns is orange, and 8-micron light is red.

Now available as a ready to frame print in two sizes:
* 7" x 7" print, mounted to fit a 10" x 10" frame (metric frame equivalent 25cm x 25cm)
* 10" x 10" print, mounted to fit a 12" x 12" frame (metric frame equivalent 30cm x 30cm)

It is also available unmounted in two sizes:
*about 13” x 13” (33cm x 33cm).
*about 20" x 20" (50cm x 50cm)

These are the approximate IMAGE size. The largest size will take about 5-7 days extra to be printed.

All sizes are available on a choice of papers, either satin photographic paper or heavy matt finish art paper.

MOUNT SIZES
You have the option of mounts sized in either inches or cm. Please indicate your choice in a message when you buy. Be aware that mounts sized in inches may have different proportions to the equivalent in cm, so are not necessarily interchangeable. Please be sure to select the correct option for your needs. In the absence of a message I will supply a mount sized in inches.

The substitution will be made as below:

10" x 10" <=> 25cm x 25cm
12" x 12" <=> 30cm x 30cm

The frame shown is for illustrative purposes only and is not included in the price. The mount will be antique white.

Although a reproduction, this print is made with the same care and materials as my own work, printed on a Canon Pro 9500 Mark II printer with pigment based inks on archival quality paper.

FAQs

All the images I sell are public domain or otherwise out of copyright. However most incorporate significant work by me to restore and prepare them for printing. When you buy from me therefore you are only buying the physical print without any rights to further reproduction. If you want to use the images in other ways, for example in leaflets or promotional material, please contact me first.
You can resell the prints in the shop, including in a retail setting. However if you want to do this on any significant scale, it would be in your interest to contact me first, since I am happy to offer discounts on bulk orders.
You are at liberty to display prints from the shop in any location or venue. As with wholesale availability, if you want to do this on any significant scale, please get in touch and I will work with you to identify suitable images. I am happy to offer discounts on bulk orders.
Almost all the items in the shop are available in other sizes - just ask. I provide mounts sized to fit standard frames in either inches or cm. If you want a different mount size, again just ask.

I can also provide mounts with multiple images. I have some examples in the shop but any combination is possible - if it can be shipped I can make it.

Finally, if you have a particular image in mind, I have hundreds if not thousands waiting to be listed and acess to many other collections, so pleae let me know what you are looking for.
No. This business has a turnover that falls below the threshold required for registering for VAT in the UK. That doesn't mean however that these taxes are not applicable when shipping to another country. If you are purchasing from a country outside the EU that has its own sales tax, you may be charged these taxes before the package can be delivered. The level at which sales taxes kick in will vary from country to country. Any such charges for customs clearance/import duty are the customers responsibility.

So long as the UK remains in the EU no VAT is due on sales from this shop within the EU.

All shipments outside the EU are accompanied by a CN22 customs clearance form showing the full value of the goods (excluding shipping costs)
There is of course no such thing as free shipping. I could include the costs to me in the listed price, but many of my customers buy more than one item so would end up in the end paying more since I would no longer be able to refund any overpayment. I think it is fairer to you my customers not to bundle shipping costs into the price you pay.

I do not take a profit on shipping. The price you pay is the cost to me plus a flat charge for packaging materials, etc. This is currently around £2.00. I refund everything you pay above that unless the amount due is trivial.
