Ring of Brodgar
I was commissioned by a collector to paint The Ring of Brodgar. The Ring of Brodgar, built 5000 years ago on the Orkney Islands has captured the imagination of people for millennia. It’s certainly a place of spiritual significance but we’ll never know the reasons for why or how they came to be. There’s evidence to suggest that Orkney was the centre of Europe in Neolithic times by the many places of historic significance. My painting depicts a healer who is resting against the stones while collecting her medicinal plants and flowers. The orbs in the sky represent the souls of our ancestors watching over us. As with many other world heritage sites Orkney’s ancient history is under threat from climate change. This piece is very close to my heart as I spent years of my childhood in Orkney and it’s where my Dad and family on my Dad’s side are from.
