In Hong Kong, it never really gets dark.
Even in the dead of night the city glows — buildings, street lights, neon, harbour reflections. A warm electric haze that never switches off. I grew up falling asleep to that glow through the curtains.
Never Dark is an original mixed media painting capturing that particular quality of Hong Kong night — the sky that isn’t truly black, the city skyline silhouetted against an electric blue atmospheric glow, a crescent moon competing with ten thousand windows, gold light streaks rising from the harbour below.
This piece is part of the Neon Memories collection — a series of Hong Kong paintings made from childhood memory by a Cardiff-based artist who grew up in the city and hasn’t returned in eight years. Each piece in the collection captures a different memory of light — the red taxi on a neon street, the ding ding tram cutting through the city canyon, the Peak Tram clinging to the jungle hillside above the harbour, and now this — the sky that never truly darkens.
The painting is built on a deep navy acrylic ground with expressive cloud forms in teal and cobalt, oil pastel marks suggesting city lights and the crescent moon in warm gold, and a silhouetted skyline anchoring the composition at the base.
