Description

Sheet 4 from a beautiful set of maps showing the Mississippi River Meander Belt and the various courses taken by the river over time. Taken together they cover the river between Cape Girardeau, MO and Donaldsonville, LA. This particular map covers the area from Blytheville, AK (located in the confusingly named Mississippi Co, although close to the border between Arkansas and Tennessee!) at the top of the map and the Mississippi /Chittenden County boundary near the bottom. The southernmost part of the River is shown as Centennial Bend.

The maps, works of art in themselves, were created by cartographer and geologist Harold Fisk, and formed part of an otherwise dry report for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers called Geological Investigation of the Alluvial Valley of the Lower Mississippi River, completed in 1944.

All the maps are available. See here:
https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PanchromaticaDesigns/search?search_query=harold+fisk

The map will be printed at approximately 18" x 13". It is available on a choice of papers, either satin finish photographic paper or matt finish heavy art paper.

It is also available as a card – see https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/289317641

The purpose of the investigation was to learn about how the valley changed over time and, perhaps most critically, about the factors that dictate its flow and flooding. Thousands of borings were made so that layers of soil and deposits of sediment from the river's old courses could be analyzed.

No river stays still and in the sluggish lower reaches of the Mississippi its waters constantly carve out new paths on its route to the Gulf of Mexico. Fisk's beautiful map captures this process over thousands of years in its subtly coloured bends and curves with echoes of anatomical drawings that show the river as a living organism.

The third image shows the full sequence of maps available. Contact me if you are interested in a different part of the river valley or for a very special deal for a full set of maps. The fourth image is also from the Fisk report and shows in simplified form the various hsitoric courses of the river over the whole meander belt. This is also available as a separate listing and can be found via the Etsy search above.

Although a reproduction, this print is made with the same care and materials as my own work, printed on a Canon Pro 9500 Mark II printer with pigment inks on archival quality paper.

FAQs

All the images I sell are public domain or otherwise out of copyright. However most incorporate significant work by me to restore and prepare them for printing. When you buy from me therefore you are only buying the physical print without any rights to further reproduction. If you want to use the images in other ways, for example in leaflets or promotional material, please contact me first.
You can resell the prints in the shop, including in a retail setting. However if you want to do this on any significant scale, it would be in your interest to contact me first, since I am happy to offer discounts on bulk orders.
You are at liberty to display prints from the shop in any location or venue. As with wholesale availability, if you want to do this on any significant scale, please get in touch and I will work with you to identify suitable images. I am happy to offer discounts on bulk orders.
Almost all the items in the shop are available in other sizes - just ask. I provide mounts sized to fit standard frames in either inches or cm. If you want a different mount size, again just ask.

I can also provide mounts with multiple images. I have some examples in the shop but any combination is possible - if it can be shipped I can make it.

Finally, if you have a particular image in mind, I have hundreds if not thousands waiting to be listed and acess to many other collections, so pleae let me know what you are looking for.
No. This business has a turnover that falls below the threshold required for registering for VAT in the UK. That doesn't mean however that these taxes are not applicable when shipping to another country. If you are purchasing from a country outside the EU that has its own sales tax, you may be charged these taxes before the package can be delivered. The level at which sales taxes kick in will vary from country to country. Any such charges for customs clearance/import duty are the customers responsibility.

So long as the UK remains in the EU no VAT is due on sales from this shop within the EU.

All shipments outside the EU are accompanied by a CN22 customs clearance form showing the full value of the goods (excluding shipping costs)
There is of course no such thing as free shipping. I could include the costs to me in the listed price, but many of my customers buy more than one item so would end up in the end paying more since I would no longer be able to refund any overpayment. I think it is fairer to you my customers not to bundle shipping costs into the price you pay.

I do not take a profit on shipping. The price you pay is the cost to me plus a flat charge for packaging materials, etc. This is currently around £2.00. I refund everything you pay above that unless the amount due is trivial.
