Taniwha S-helix S-glass fly rod blanks (4-piece)
Supplied with a good quality rod sock - cork handle sold separately.

I am delighted to introduce Taniwha S-helix series of fibre glass fly rods and blanks to the UK market as a Taniwha Rodworks exclusive. I have specified and tuned these tapers to my requirements through several prototype stages over the past 18 months. They are made for me by a designer whose early career included designing high performance fly rods for a well regarded New Zealand brand before establishing his own advanced composites manufacturing facility based in China.

TSH blanks are carefully constructed tapers made from uni-directional S-glass, a higher strain and faster recovery fiberglass almost identical in modulus to cane. A feature I believe to be unique to the range is the use of a helical wound S-glass scrim for improved hoop strength and faster blank recovery. They offer excellent performance, and first class fit and finish at a surprisingly reasonable price for this quality.

The action is fast-medium to fast for glass with plenty of reserve power, with initial flex mainly in the top third of the blank. This range of blanks has a faster action and faster recovery than my popular TSG range of stream fishing blanks, with added zip on line shoot and much more power to lift and aerialise longer lines. The relaxed smoothness that is the hallmark of casting a fiberglass fly rod is retained. Ferrules are tip-over-butt (not spigots).

Two translucent colours are available - Ghost Grey and Olive green. The finished rod will glow in sunlight.

S-glass fabric is not transparent and some of the underlying blank structure remains visible after manufacture, in the form of striations or ghosting markings visible when help up to the light. The occasional very small dark speck may also visible on close inspection. These are normal and purely cosmetic, and most people do not notice them.

Model descriptions

TSH 764 7'6" #4 4-piece: A crisp, medium to medium-fast for glass action. Tip sensitivity favours stream fishing river applications, dry fly and light-medium nymphing and duo rigs (beads 2-3mm).
Tip: 1.7mm #4.5
Butt: 9.1mm (winding check 9mm)
Weight: 49g 1.9oz

TSH 805 8'0 #5 4-piece: A true 5-weight all rounder with plenty of power and a crisp, medium-fast to fast for glass action. Tip sensitivity favours river applications including all normal sizes of dry fly, duo rigs, nymphs up to around 3-4mm tungsten bead. Added mid and butt power so will also cast smaller streamers and lures well.
Tip: 1.7mm #4.5
Butt: 10.5mm (winding check 10.5mm)
Weight: 59g 2.3oz

TSH 836 8'3" #6 4-piece: similar flex profile with a stronger tip and added power reserves compared to the #5. A fine all-rounder that also casts well with a punchy or long belly #5, a better choice for heavier nymphs and duo rigs than the 8'#5, but will still present a dry fly nicely. Perfect lure tosser and sink tip streamer rod for trout. Ample power for lighter inshore saltwater use and carp dry fly.
Tip: 1.9mm #5
Butt: 11mm (winding check 10.5mm)
Weight: 71g 2.8oz

TSH 838 8'3" #7/8 4-piece (ghost grey only): A beast tamer with huge lifting power, strong tip and a faster tip action supported by a strong mid section.
The TSH 838 is recommended for saltwater use, bass, carp and light pike fishing, also suitable for big streamer monster trout fishing and sinking or Hi-D sink tip lines. Lengths below 9' reduce swing weight and give you improved leverage against strong fish, so may also suit boat or kayak anglers.
Tip: 2.4mm #6
Butt: 12.8mm (winding check 12.5mm)
Weight: 84g 2.8oz

I have bought a few glass blanks recently, but this is by far the best and one of the best value. The quality and finish is spot on, the blank is straight and I really like the concept of overfit joints rather than ugly spigots. The blank lights up in the sun and looks awesome. As to the action, well, the rod is super light and surprisingly fast in recovery. With a dry fly it is an absolute delight. I also fished it Duo style and it handles tungsten beads upto 2.5mm nicely. Started to struggle a little with heavier nymphs, but that's what the next blank size up is for, so not a problem. Highly recommended for dry fly, lighter Duo fishing and big fish on lighter tippets. Love it!!

Additional policies

Warranty: new goods are sold with a 12 month warranty for the original purchaser against manufacturing defects unless otherwise stated. I check all stock before dispatch, and you should do so before use. In the rare event your purchase has a defect, please contact me to arrange a return and refund or replacement. Any rod breakage from a defect would most likely happen soon after purchase.

We will replace any defective new item at no additional cost, or offer you your choice of a substitute or refund if no longer available or out of stock. If a rod or rod blank is defective, we will replace the defective section. Components are covered individually and the warranty does not extend to the rest of the rod you build from them or any consequential loss.

Breakages: The warranty does not cover future accidental damage, normal wear and tear, loss or mis-use. Rods should be stored and transported in a protective tube, and be fully dry after use before storage. We have some replacement sections, and whilst stocks last replacement parts may be available at proportionate cost + postage. Replacement sections are not available for rods sold as seconds or that are discounted in an end-of-line clearance.

Returns for replacement or refund: To obtain a replacement all pieces or sections of the original item must be returned so that the defect or cause of breakage can be assessed. Before doing so with a built rod, carefully remove any components you wish to retain for re-use, these will otherwise be disposed of.

Appropriate use: The warrantly is void if the item is modified or used for purposes other than to make a fly rod or (excepting rod blanks) to repair a fly rod. Fly rod blanks are designed and warranted for singled handed use with a line of the correct weight using the AFFTA standard unless otherwise stated.

Seconds: Items sold as seconds are cosmetic seconds that are fit for purpose but there is no warranty or right of return on goods sold as seconds.

Future accidental damage or loss may also be covered on your Home and Contents insurance policy.
