PDF Genuine Original Guernsey for 2 to 5 year old

Materials required: 5ply Guernsey yarn 400g, set of UK size 13 (US 1, 2.5 mm) dpns, (optional circular needle for body).

This pattern, created by myself, is a faithful iteration of a genuine Cornish Guernsey (also known as a knit-frock) traditionally over-sized for a 2 year-old and should last for several years (roll back the sleeve cuffs and revel in the extra length). The front and back are identical, thus allowing even wear on both body and sleeves, preventing uneven wear-out. The firm highly twisted wool and thin needles create a soft, dense and warm garment, for wearing outdoors in a British winter/spring/autumn.

Guernsey wool is very hardwearing and was created for sea-going garments, for fishermen, bargees, labourers and outdoor workers of the 19th century. It is unlikely that a child could wear this garment out if it is knitted in genuine guernsey wool, so expect it to be handed down through several children or generations. During wear, proper guernsey yarn develops a polish or sheen which gives it more stitch definition and helps to prevent wear. If the cuffs wear out, just rip them back and knit new cuffs - as the arms are knitted downwards, this is easy to do. The length of the arms can also be adjusted by this technique.

Several of the decorative patterns are taken from Mary Wright’s book ‘Cornish Guernseys & Knit-frocks’ published by The Heritage Press, Clifton-upon-Teme, Worcestershire, UK; first published in 1979.

This guernsey will be a very dese hardwearing garment which cannot be replicated at this tension by a machine. This guernsey may well become a family heirloom!

These lovely outfits are easy to adapt to fit an 8” Berenguer Baby doll. I used merino wool sock yarn in sunny yellow using #11 (Can.) ndls. I enjoy just looking at the Baby doll oncover, brought memories of afternoons playing dolls with my sister! Delivery was prompt, complete, and no difficulty in reading instructions. Thanks for rescuing these patterns for all dolllovers! Price is reasonable too. Will visit your site again soon, Lorna.

Beautifully made item. Received sooner than I expected. I’ve been knitting for 60 years, but struggle with arthritis in my right thumb & wrist. The instructions received with the knitting belt are very clear along with the YouTube video. Already 2 hours into using this accessory, I know knitting is going to be easier and far less painful. Thank you, Lorna! This knitting belt is well worth the price!
