Item details

Vintage from the 1920s

Material

Gemstone: Garnet

Here is an unusual and magnificent vintage Art Deco gilded (golden coloured) silver snake ('ouroboros') bangle with turquoise and coral embellishments.

Era: Probably 1920-1940

Style: Art Deco / Egyptian Revival / Chinoiserie

Origin: Austria

Materials: Gilded silver (the piece looks very much like gold although it is actually silver with gilding). It may be vermeil but I don't have the equipment to test the micron depth of the gilt.

Coral.

Turquoise.

Measurements:

Snake head: 30 mm x 7.8 mm (1.18 inches x 0.3 inches)

Inner diameter: 65 mm x 53 mm (2.5 inches x 2 inches)

Weight: 12.85 grams

Hallmarks: SILVER

Makers Mark: NONE

Manufacturing: The snake head itself is probably cast before being set with the turquoise and corals. I am uncertain how the woven mesh would have been made.

Condition: Excellent. I can't see any loss of gilt or any flaws on the piece.

Value Points: What a truly fabulous and unusual piece! True Art Deco design, very striking, sexy and so stylish. It is a surprisingly fine feeling piece. This will look gorgeous with evening wear or with a simple daytime outfit. Certain to be treasured and worn for years to come.

During the Art Deco era there were quite a few snake bangles created with turquoise and coral embellishments (they were usually made in Cairo). However, this one is quite different from any I have seen before. This almost has a Chinese look about it making me wonder if it's actually Chinoiserie. Regardless, it is an amazing bracelet and is bound to get endless compliments.

Final words:

The bracelet can be worn with the snake's tail in its mouth or not as you choose. (If worn in in the mouth then it is an 'ouroboros' - 'the snake that eats its own tail' - a powerful symbol of infinity and wholeness.)

The snake motif in jewellery is iconic and is a testimony to the Art Deco's eras obsession with all things exotic. Snakes can symbolise many things but have often been thought to bring good fortune and to have magical qualities.
