Description

This hand made icon of Our Lady of Mount Carmel with the Christ Child in her arms is painted in egg tempera, using hand-ground azurite and earth ochres. The gold background has been applied using the water gilding technique and the garment highlights painted in hand-made shell gold, all 24 carat.

The icon is 18cm wide, 24cm high and the birch ply is 2.5cm thick (7" x 9.5" x 1"). The edges are painted and varnished with shellac, but the icon itself is unvarnished and has tempered (hardened) for almost 6 months. There is a single brass hook on the back for hanging on the wall.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is the patroness of the Carmelite Order. Mount Carmel had been a holy mountain long before the birth of Our Lord and is located near the modern port city of Haifa, Israel, not far from where Christ grew up. By the 12th century it had become a home to Carmelite monastics with a particular devotion to the Virgin Mary. However, by the end of the 13th century, political and religious upheaval resulted in the Carmelites leaving to travel to Europe. Some established monasteries as far north as England such as Aylesford Priory, Kent, not far from where I was born.

Our Lady is holding a scapular, known as a sacramental - a symbol of devotion to her.

The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on July 16.
