THIS LISTING HOLDS THE English, Dutch, German, Danish and Swedish VERSION OF THE PATTERN.

Inspired by a journey through Japan last year I made a few notes about a pattern idea that involved the sacred lotus flowers and the stunning blossom trees that is tourist visit idea number one when you go to Japan. I had an idea in my head to turn these wonderful gifts of nature into a crochet pattern. After a lot of designing and testing, the result was beyond my imagination.

Every project so far made in any kind of yarn is made with a 3 mm hook.

The finished sizes of the projects are :

Finished size in Catona cotton: 75 cm/ 29.5 inches from point to point
Finished size in Scheepjes Whirl: 70 cm / 27,5 inches from point to point

UPDATE 10/03: On my blog, I wrote a separate blogpost about extending the pattern because there were a lot of questions about it.

Yarn needed :

Of course, u can use any yarn you like, but the examples are used :

6 colors of mercerized cotton – I used Scheepjes Catona in skeins of 50 grams.
Color A : - 392 lime juice ( 25 grams needed )
Color B : 512 Lime ( 45 grams needed )
Color C : 130 Old Lace ( 60 grams needed )
Color D : 255 Nude ( 90 grams needed )
Color E : 408 Old Rose ( 55 grams needed )
Color F : 264 Light Coral ( 40 grams needed )

Or take a Scheepjes Whirl with a length of 1000 meters and a weight of 215 – 225 grams. You can just work your way through the pattern without color changing. The pattern is written both ways, allowing color changes and working with one thread. You only have to make the modifications when using a Whirl because you will use more yarn. See the notes about it in the pattern. When finished, you will have 30 – 50 grams left; this depends on the tension of your work.

stitches used in this pattern variates from sl st - tr but most of them are front-posted or back-posted. There is written instruction for the stitches; however, I refer to the internet if this is not enough to make them. These are common stitches that can be found all over the internet with tutorials. All stitches are in US/European measurements.

The pattern is tested carefully by five different testers.

The pattern is now available in English, Swedish, Dutch, Danish, and German translations also. The German translation is made by Christina Berberich. The Swedish version is translated by Johanna Lindahl from Mijo Crochet. The Danish version is translated by Line Lykholt.

In January 2023 I uploaded a fully re-written pattern for the English and Dutch versions of the pattern. These patterns now hold a chart instead of photos.

Beautiful pattern! Very happy with the result! I made the extension, described on his blog. As someone in the comments said (Mervi), the mandala will no longer lay flat if you make the extension. But it will still work out fine if you do the 2 following things: 1) Stretch the mandala into a very big hoop. I managed to fit it into a 1 meter hoop, and it lays flat perfectly. If it does not want to lay flat, use a bigger hoop. 2) Switch to smaller hooks for the extenstion. I made rows 1-25 with hook 2,75mm (I crochet loosely, so I used 2,75mm in stead of 3mm). Then I repeated rows 19-25 with hook 2,5mm. And then I made rows 26-39 with hook 2,25mm. The mandala will still not lay flat, but if you stretch it into a big enough hoop, it will work out fine. Note: 1 Scheepjes Whirl cake is not enough if you want to make the extension.

Loved this pattern. My first ever mandala and it was really easy to follow. Some tweaks to make if I do it again but that’s my own experience level not the pattern!

Generally a well-written pattern. And I love the designs from the guy with the hook. But unfortunately the description, how to extend the pattern, doesn't work at all. You get far too many stitches, and the mandala doesn't lay flat. So don't rely on the description he made on his blog! It's a bit frustrating, to plan the whole thing for a huger loop, and then realize on nearly the whole way through, that it doesn't work. Still love his other patterns, though! 💕
