Raku little hedgehogs. The Raku firing makes each bear unique and I am never sure exactly how they are going to come out.
I build each hedgehog by hand with a white clay, which is quite gritty to survive the thermal shocks of the raku firing processes. I use several tools to make the spikes so that they become random with different thickness. I biscuit fire my work first in an electric kiln, then glaze the piece with a transparent glaze for the white parts. I then fire them in the raku kiln till about 1000C, before opening the kiln, the hedgehogs are then put in a steel box with saw dust. Since the box is fairly air tight, the combustion of the saw dust draws oxygen from the clay and produces the black colour in the cracks in the glaze, and on their back, which is characteristic of Raku.
The quoted price is for one hedgehog only.

I’ve bought a couple of Raku houses from Nathalie & am now building a collection of hedgehogs for my husband, to add to the family of real ones we have in our garden! I have reviewed these items before but wanted to add that all of Nathalie’s items arrive cocooned in hand knitted pouches. Such a lovely touch that make perfect gifts.
These hedgehogs are wonderful. Really cute & with lots of character. Almost like the ones in our garden..... 😊
very happy with my purchase
