I try to make my tortoises look happy and they're often laughing. The Raku firing makes each of them unique and I am never sure exactly how they are going to come out.
I build my tortoises by hand with a white clay, which is quite gritty to survive the thermal shocks of the raku firing processes. I biscuit fire my work first in an electric kiln, then glaze the piece with a copper-based glaze for the turquoise parts. I then fire them in the raku kiln till about 1000C, before opening the kiln, the tortoises are then put in a steel box with saw dust. Since the box is fairly air tight, the combustion of the saw dust draws oxygen from the clay and produces the black colour in the cracks in the glaze, and in any unglazed parts, which is characteristic of Raku. The copper reduction process in the sawdust box generates an array of colours which are different every time.

This little mini chicken is an absolute delight. I reached out to Nathalie to ask what minis she had left as I wanted to send a couple of chickens as a gift... Her response back was prompt, friendly, included pictures and couldn't have been more helpful. I ordered the chickens and they arrived SO fast. Brilliant. These little beauties are sweet, beautifully crafted and are generally just a chickeny delight. I could not have had a better transaction and my friend who received them was CHUFFED.
