Description

Independents Biennial is a programme of contemporary visual art that has run under various names and groups since 1999. In the 19 years since, it has always supported artists from around the North West, and continues towards that work under the new leadership of Art in Liverpool in 2018.

This publication documents 2018’s festival, and marks a commitment of Art in Liverpool to continue the work into 2020, building stronger relationships between cultural institutions large and small, and creating evermore powerful platforms for local artists’ voices.

Eight of the most exciting and engaged writers from around the Liverpool City Region recount the festival through poetry, prose, interview, essay and transcript in these pages. Their talent is on display, as well as an outstanding ability to write, without inhibition, on subjects directly and indirectly related to the festival to which they were appointed.

A note about the cover:
Volunteer Invigilators worked with Independents Biennial 2018, blurring roles as photographers, curators, artists, writers and invigilators. In the latter role, creative minds don’t often rest. Left to their devices with limitless pads of post-it notes, they created Doodle Wall, which became the cover, and chapter separators to this book.

Inside covers:
Excerpts from Thoughts on the air become words in print or A transcribed converstation whilst birdwatching with artists Liam Peacock and Gideon Vass in Rimrose Valley Country Park, Mark Simmonds, 2018

ISBN 978-1-78926-833-1
