This bespoke smudge fan has been created by myself using feathers from Duck and Peacock quills. All feathers are feathers that have been dropped naturally (moulted) as the birds go through the seasons moulting. I've used Ash to make the handle which has been sanded and anointed with Frankincense. Ash is known as the Goddess Tree. Ash wood was used for the traditional handle of the besom broom. Druid wands were often made of ash because of its straight grain, and the poles of witches' brooms were often made of ash and was representative of protection and strength. Ash wands are good for healing, general and solar magic. Each fan is unique as is the symbolism linked with the individual feathers used in making the smudging fans

As a symbol across many cultures, feathers have always represented a connection to spiritual realms and to divinity. And because of their connection to birds, they have always been a symbol of flight and freedom, not just physically, but also in a mental or spiritual sense.

Ducks symbolize many things. These birds are connected with the spiritual world by many bonds. Because of their various capabilities, ducks are believed to be able to travel between the realms of spiritual forces and the world of our reality. Peacock symbolism: Vision, Royalty, Spirituality, Awakening,As a symbol across many cultures, feathers have always represented a connection to spiritual realms and to divinity. Guidance, Protection, & Watchfulness. In Greco-Roman mythology the Peacock tail has the "eyes" of the stars. ... For this reason the Peacock feather represents immortality, and can absorb negative energies, protecting those who wear them.

Smudging is a ritual to cleanse or clear a person, a place or an object of negative energies, spirits or influences. It is a ritual of cleansing and purification for the physical and spiritual bodies to remove negative energy. Smudging is not strictly for use in cleansing and purifying, it can be used to draw in positive energies and as a means of creating smoke to carry our prayers up to the Great Spirit.
The smudging ceremony involves the burning of special sacred plants, such as white sage, herbal resins or incense, then either passing an object through the resulting smoke, or fanning the smoke around a person or place. The spirit of the plant purifies whatever is being smudged. Remember that when you smudge you are asking the spirit of the sacred plants for assistance. We are entering into a relationship with the powers of these plants and with the spirits of a sacred ceremony.

There are many herbs that you can use for smudging. Mugwort (Black Sage) can also be used and is sold within our shop.
