GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE KNITTING PATTERNS IN OUR BOOKS:
Knitting toys is fun and our Woolly Tales characters are suitable for fairly novice knitters, see below for the techniques required. The best thing about knitting toys is that they don’t take too long, you don’t need much yarn or to think about gauge and if your Woolly Tales character ends up either being really massive or teeny tiny, it really doesn’t matter - unlike knitting a jumper! So we hope you enjoy our knitting patterns as much as you enjoy our Woolly Tales!
TECHNIQUES REQUIRED:
All our Woolly Tales patterns are knit using “The Magic Loop” method on circular needles.
You will need to: cast on, bind off, work increases and decreases, and picking up stitches.
THE MAGIC LOOP METHOD:
Magic Loop method is a simple technique for creating tubes on one long circular needle. It avoids the need for double pointed needles and is ideal for creating small toys like our Woolly Tales characters. If you are unfamiliar with knitting on circular needles or the Magic Loop method, do have a look at the many instructional videos on YouTube. Once you get the knack, you won’t look back!
PICKING UP STITCHES:
To avoid lots of sewing body parts on our characters, our patterns ask you to pick up stitches from the main body. It is simply a case of slipping your needle into the stitches on the body, and so you can knit in the round, doing the same on the row below with your other needle (both needles should point in the same direction).
Noses are often created by creating a row of waste yarn, which is then removed to release the stitches and allow you to knit the nose into the body of your character.
MATERIALS:
All Woolly Tales characters are knit using DK (Light/Worsted) yarn, using 3.75mm circular needles (at least 100cm long).
We recommend using needles 1-2 sizes smaller than what is recommended for your yarn to ensure that the stuffing won’t show through.
If you want to stick to the exact colours used, we have given the yarn used in the pattern. To ensure our Woolly Tales don’t cost the earth, most of our patterns use Stylecraft yarn, which is a value for money yarn with a great colour range. However, we would encourage you to make your Woolly Tales character your own, so go crazy with colours. You can also use thicker yarn for a larger character.
NOTIONS:
Toy stuffing, place markers (optional), row counters, darning needle, scissors.
