Description

This is a beautiful rare Herta Huber-Roethe vase in the 'Garda' decor, Ceramic workshop Achdorf, Landshut, Germany circa 1950s.

Herta Huber-Roethe and her husband Ernst took over the pottery Ashdorf in Landshut, Germany in 1930, in 1984 the company was sold. This vase is typical of their hand decorated studio pottery style.

A wonderful minimal simple form, a bulbous flattened ovoid shape with a fishmouth opening. Perfect as a small bud or posy vase or as a display piece.

Stunning hand decorated decor, a mottled light grey glaze has a stone like appearance, this has a beautifully rendered hand incised image of an Italian building and Cypress trees, representing Lake Garda, hence the 'Garda' decor. Picked out in lovely light tones of yellow, blue orange, green and brown.

Very reminiscent of the era and most likely influenced by Picasso, Cubism and Modern Art styles, understated, elegant and classic design.

Would complement any collection of West German or European art or studio pottery, and would look fantastic in any retro, vintage, mid century, fifties, modernist, minimal or contemporary interior.

In great condition, there is a little knock to the inner rim on one side, that has cracked the glaze, doesn't detract on display.

Hand incised mark to the base 'Foreign 15/3'.

Measures 11 x 10 x 9cm / 4.4 x 4 x 3.5in.
