-I took this photo on a trip to New Zealand in March, 2015. I was part of a scouting group working on a documentary about Kapa Haka, which is a cultural dance or performance art of the
Maori people. We were in Christchurch, which is on the south island. Cyclone Pam was was hitting the islands of Vanuatu at the time, one of my good friends was living there at the time, he
later described to me the devastation that occurred at the time. He himself was slammed against an outcropping of rock by a giant wave during the cyclone. Not much of the effect was
seen in New Zealand, but the morning that I took this photo I walked out onto the beach with the wind whipping my hair and the boisterous waves crashing onto the shore. Only later would
I learn of the destruction that had occurred just to the north of me.
