"Abstract Rock Formation", Seahouses, Northumberland is an original wool painting by West Yorkshire fibre artist Janine Jacques.

Abstract Rock Formation was inspired by a holiday in Seahouses Northumberland. We went on a walk from Seahouses to Bamburgh beach. As I walked across the rocks just beyond Seahouses I looked down to see all these different patterns in the rocks worn by the sea. This depicts a section of the rocks, close up and makes a lovely abstract pattern.

My art is influenced by nature, landscape and mark making. The change of seasons, the light as it shines through leaves in a forest. I look for patterns and details within the landscape - flowers, marks on trees, rock and sand patterns on a beach.

I draw upon my past experience to bring the creative process of drawing and
painting to my fibre art. To create mixed media pieces full of colour. I try to celebrate the materials used as well as the subject matter. I now use merino wool as my ‘paint’ a sewing maching as my ‘pencil’ and embroidery thread to add detail. Creating a multi-layered image, of bold colours and softer details with thread of different thicknesses.

The Process:-
.................................

The first stage of any piece of art is planning. I always draw sketches of what I plan to create. This is very important to visualise the composition of the piece.

Next I buy merino wool in lots of different colours (as you would tubes of paint) and lay out the loose fibres of different coloured wool onto my base (as you would paint on canvas). Just like a painting this can take a long time to create.

The next stage is to make these loose fibres of wool stick together and create the felt artwork. You do this by adding hot soapy water and friction. The hot water opens up the wools scales and the friction (rubbing/rolling) binds them together. During this process the wool shrinks by about 20%. This part alone takes about 30 minutes for this size of artwork.

Once dry I then needle felt into the piece to sharpen some of the details.

Next I iron on a piece of backing material to strengthen the artwork ready to sew into it. Using a sewing machine I use different coloured cotton threads to create the lines within the piece (as you would a pencil or piece of charcoal).

The last stage is to hand sew into it with embroidery thread.

Felted wool is naturally dirt and odour repellent so unlikely to need washing. But if you do spill something on it give it a shake off and dab with a clean cloth. If it needs a wash just hand wash in cool water, rinse and press between 2 towels to remove excess water, reshape and dry naturally. DO NOT use a washing machine or tumble dry.
If you have a landscape you love and would like me to do a felt tea cosy of it please get in touch and send me the picture of the landscape you like.

Please note the landscapes I re-create are artistic impressions of the landscape and not an exact copy of the landscape. So it will end up having a look and feel of the landscape but not a copy of it.

I'll give you an estimate of the time it will take to produce at the time. But as a guide allow 2 weeks to create plus delivery time to your country.
