This solid silver pendant features a genuine Celtic coin that was used in Iron Age Brittan around 2000 years ago!

The ancient coin, which appears to have been made from a copper-rich bronze, has a horse and a shining sun or star on the front and a, just about visible, wild boar on the back.
These coins were used by the Ambiani Celtic tribes, including the Belgae of Britain. Some scholars also associate them with the Fir Bolg people of Ireland. The Ambiani were followers of the god Cernunnos and were known to be fierce warriors.

Although we will never know who’s hands the coin passed through, or what it was used to buy, it is still a tangible, physical link to those long-ago times when Brittan was ruled by Celtic chieftains, warrior princesses and pagan druid priests.

Despite the ancient coin’s irregular shape and uneven thickness I have managed to set it into the silver pendant, as if it were a precious gem. The mount itself was initially hand carved in wax before having a mould taken from it and being cast in solid silver. The design on the pendant was inspired by the pattern on an ancient shield that was recovered from the River Thames and is now housed in the British Museum.

The finished talisman has been decorated with a green and gold patina, reminiscent of the British landscape, under which the coin had lain hidden for two millennia. It was finally given a Hallmark to prove it is solid sterling silver. The pendant weighs just over 15g, which is around half an ounce, and measures a little under 3cm, which is a bit over an inch in diameter.

This pendant is supplied on a sturdy, sterling silver chain in its own gift box. If you would prefer not to buy the silver chain with this pendant, please contact me for a revised price.
