Add some extra stitches to Cross Stitch embroidery and you are on the road to Wessex Stitchery. Here Chain Stitches, Straight stitches, Fly Stitches and others are used to build patterns, which not only give wonderful textures but also mix the colours with spectacular results. This form of counted thread embroidery is really easy to master and will have you wanting to stitch more and more. You can work on your favourite fabric , Aida or evenweave, and at a scale you like too. Simply adjust the number of strands of thread used to work at different gauges.
The name Wessex Stitchery for this type of work derives from the fact that its inventor, Margaret Foster, lived in the city of Bath in the English West Country, an area centuries ago that was known as Wessex.
