This solid silver pendant features part of a genuine medieval coin, known as a ‘Cross Penny’, that would have been in circulation around the time of kings like Richard the Lionheart and the legends of Ivanhoe and Robin Hood.

The pennies are cut it into quarters because, in those days, if you wanted to buy something for ½ a penny, you just cut a penny in half. If you only wanted to pay ¼ of a penny, you cut it into quarters – they didn’t mess around those medieval knights!
Although we will never really know who’s hands the coin passed through, or what it was used to buy, it is perfectly possible that it has been wagered on a jousting tournament, spent on a dress for a royal banquet or even taken on a crusade.
Whatever it was spent on, it is unquestionably a tangible, physical link to those long-ago days that were some of the most thrilling and romantic periods in British history!

The quarter coin has been set into a silver pendant, as if it were a precious gem. The design of the mount itself was based on an enchanted shield featured in a medieval manuscript. The pendant was initially hand carved before having a mould taken from it and being cast in solid silver.
The pendant was set with a natural, cabochon cut smoky quartz gemstone before being coated with rhodium (a metal rarer than platinum), is was then given a matching coloured patina.

The pendant weighs around 7g and measures 3.5cm, which is a little over one and one third inches long.

This pendant is supplied on a suitably heavy 20” long sterling silver chain in its own gift box.
