Charts and instructions, Stitch explanation

This beautiful form of embroidery is often worked on canvas using wool. Here it is presented on Hardanger fabric (22 count) using stranded cottons for a finer effect. Also known as Florentine or Flame Stitch Embroidery, the origins of the style go back in time to Florence and then even further back. It is believed to have been introduced to Italy when a princess from Hungary married into a family there. In the same way as Catherine of Aragon brought Blackwork to England, a royal moving with her entourage and belongings brought new fashions with her. History still works this way. There is a fair bit of explanation of the stitch forms included with this piece, which I hope you will find interesting and helpful.
