This is one of those embroideries that looks even better in real life than it does in any photograph, especially if you stand back from it. It is one of my personal favourites. A typical Dutch scene of the sort that can still be seen today if you travel the small roads of the Netherlands, the windmill and polders are depicted using Blackwork techniques. The stitch patterns are used to show texture and tones and are superbly suited to the purpose. Just one colour is used throughout with a few stitches worked in two strands but mostly just a single strand of cotton. Here is your chance to show what modern embroidery really can do!
