Vintage from the 1980s

Hardwood, elm, Signed

Height: 17 Centimetres

A huge signed stretching stylised bird figurine, dating from 1980. It's by John Griffiths, St Agnes, Cornwall, England - he seems to have specialised in carving simplified mid century style stretching animal and bird figurines. I can't find any more information about him, but thanks to Cornish Picker online I've been able to identify him.

A lot of these are elm wood, I'm not sure if this is, but it certainly looks similar. The hardwood has a reddy teak tone, with a vivid dark grain, forming beautiful lines and darker ares. I think John may have lightly 'torched' some areas to create darker detail. See pics. It's beautifully and skillfully carved - the bird is stretching up and twisting. Lightly oiled or varnished to give a smooth tactile satin finish. Flat base with signature - hard to read, but you can make out 'J... 80 Cornwall'.

The bird is typically mid century styled - I'm unsure as what breed of bird it is, but with the short legs and long neck, he could be a cormorant. He may even be a goose. Perfect for a mid-century inspired interior, on a teak sideboard or shelf.

He's very tall - 17" or 43cm, and in very good condition. There is a chip off the end of his beak, but I feel this is hard to notice. Otherwise excellent with no marks or scratches.

Items weighing under 2kg total will be posted by 2nd class Royal Mail. If it's a high value item I'll add Signed For. Items weighing over 2kg will be posted by Hermes, and if they are high value I'll add Signed For. I may not be able to post to some areas of the UK, such as the Channel Islands, but I'll give it a good go! I'll try to post within 24 hours (when Post Office opening hours allow).
All postage abroad will be by Royal Mail's International Tracked and Signed service, so will need signing for your end. Please say if you'd prefer just a Tracked service instead. I can't post anything that weighs over 2kg or is larger than a 'small parcel'.
I have specially chosen these items to be of superior quality and condition for their age and era. All my items are vintage (25+ years old) and may naturally have some wear and tear which may not be in the description. I have written everything to the best of my ability, and tried to describe any obvious flaws. The photos also help to show the condition - please view all photos and read the descriptions.
For lower value items I'm happy for you to provide the address and unique code for a UK onward mailing company, but I cannot accept responsibility for any damage or non-delivery beyond the mailing company's address. Once the UK mailing company has safely received the parcel it is no longer my responsibility.
Why buy new? Buy vintage, and help protect the planet. You're rescuing vintage pieces for future generations. Also, please don't bin my packaging - save, re-use and recycle. Thank you.
I use large bubble bubble-wrap with strengthening card and sturdy cardboard boxes. I often double box for safety and I re-use old newspapers to fill any gaps. I have been selling on Etsy for over five years and know and trust my packing. Jewellery is posted in small sturdy cardboard jewellery boxes, in a mailing bag. (Please re-use or recycle any packaging!)
UK free postage is factored into all my prices... I think UK customers like to see an upfront price including postage with no hidden surprises. Sorry I can't offer free post worldwide.
