How to cast on and divide your stitches over the double pointed needles
How to knit a slip stitch heel flap
How to create a gusset for a snug and comfortable fitting sock

How to block your socks for a smooth and professional finish

Working with double pointed needles and starting at the cuff this pattern will guide you through each stage of sock knitting step-by-step with full video tutorials. The pattern has 3 sizes, although these are easily customisable and details are given on how to adjust for a perfect fitting sock.

As the pattern name suggests - these socks are ideal for showcasing a colourful skein of fingering weight / 4 ply yarn!

Sizes and Measurements

Hand knit socks are designed to be slightly smaller than the foot length to give a small amount of negative ease. This means that they will hug the foot and leg and stay in place.

The sizes given in this pattern are for adult sizes in small, medium and large. Full details of the measurements and how to adjust for the perfect fitting sock are given in the pattern.

Materials Used

When choosing the yarn for your socks I recommend looking for a yarn with nylon content or a high twist as this adds extra durability and strength.

• 1 x 3.5oz / 100g, 440 yd / 400m skein of Under the Olive Tree merino / nylon blend 4ply yarn. The yarn used in the pattern is the Lavender Fields (75% superwash merino / 25% nylon)
• 1 set of 2.5mm double pointed needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)
• 1 stitch marker
• 1 Tapestry Needle

Gauge - 32 stitches and 44 rows to 4” / 10cm in stockinette stitch after blocking

This pattern has been professionally tech edited and test knit prior to publication.

I have always been too scared to knit socks but had some fingering yarn and decided to give it a go. This was an excellent pattern and I loved that the videos were clickable links so I didn’t have to copy and paste it into a browser. I love that this project didn’t involve tons of counting stitches and was a nice small project to take on the go. It took me two weeks knitting off and on and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I may even try some of their other sock patterns. I love my little socks so much!

I love this pattern! The pattern was available immediately after purchase, and the download was very easy. Having never attempted a sock before, this “Let the Yarn Shine” pattern was perfect. I printed off the PDF to follow as you would a conventional pattern... but the great thing about this one is that when I got to a tricky / unfamiliar sock-y bit (turning the heel, and using Kitchener stitch to join the toe seam) I could go back to my online version of the pattern and click a link to a YouTube video that showed me exactly how to do it: fantastic! I’ve now finished my first sock and am enthusiastically working through the second one. Can’t wait to wear and show them off to everyone...

very good pattern! i am learning to make socks and this pattern is very helpful. the only things that weren't there that would have made it easier to follow would be more clarity about whether a number refers to the size in length or in width, for if someone is for example a medium in width but a large in length, so it's easier to make socks sized that way, and instructions on how to adjust for thinner yarn on smaller needles. to be clear, the pattern is great as is! i really like the reinforced heel flap. (thanks for answering my question about the length of the heel flap!)
