We harvested this white oak from our former family farm after a tornado. The tornado ripped down many trees on the property and damaged one of the machine sheds. We sold the property not long after the storm but wanted to have a lasting legacy of lumber to remember our time there. We made the most of it and hired a very kind man with a portable lumber mill to come and cut up all the trees. We processed a total of five white oak trees and two hickory trees.
We handpick all our lumber from this batch of trees for each item in this Etsy store. The color of our white oak and hickory is stunning. After cutting our lumber with a portable sawmill, we dried it all in a state-of-the-art vacuum kiln. A vacuum kiln is much different from traditional drying methods. The temperature in a vacuum kiln does not get as hot as a conventional only takes a fraction of the time. You get a much better result because the wood releases the water without the excessive stresses of the high temperature or long duration. Conventional kiln drying for white oak can take weeks or months for over a year, depending on thickness. We cut some of our lumber at 2 inches thick. Our first load was 1500 board feet, and it lost over 500 gallons of water in 10 days! The sugars in the wood never got burnt or super stressed, so the color is very dynamic and full of character. We were delighted with the technology and did two more loads of hickory and white oak, 3000 plus board feet. We were happy with the results and did everything possible to preserve this lumber from our family farm. We will now have stock to make items for many years to come.
Our mission was to add something unique and special to the world while we were here. These gifts we create will likely outlast all of us, but the spirit and joy they bring have the potential to pass a feeling of happiness for many years to come. We send custom creations from our workshop with love and care for our customers to share in the best experience possible.
Please let me know if you have any questions, thank you and have a great day :)
