Most lights will work well with the 2" and 3" lifts. 4" and up are best used with large floating plants, potatoes, pothos, and for assisting you to get the look you are trying to achieve. Keep in mind your PAR (Photosynthetic Active Radiation) will go down the farther you lift the light.
