About

My name is Natalie Stafford and along with my partner Michael we have created our family business, Tilly Rose Designs. We specialise in handmade, hand-painted designs made from reclaimed wood.
We have evolved organically into a family-run business from small beginnings in a small Cornish surfing village. ‘The wall’ (as it is known by the locals there) at the top of Polzeath beach is often a hub of creative activity and it is where Tilly Rose Designs really began. The beauty and creative potential of the driftwood that is thrown out of the ocean has always fascinated me. Each piece is charmingly unique and has its own untold story. I wanted to capture and preserve this and so was inspired to use my love of painting to create handmade pieces of artwork and home décor.

I spent many summers during my family holidays sat on the wall painting on, and experimenting with, the amazing bits of wood I found washed up on the beach.
Spending a lot of time in Michael's native Cape Town, South Africa we drew further inspiration from the up-cycling that is prevalent in this amazing city, and have since used this concept to inspire larger pieces of work such as furniture. Mirrors, wardrobes, toy boxes, and book shelves are just some of the pieces we have made. Sometimes the mistakes we make create an unexpected perfection and we believe the way we work enables true originals to be created. We always try to maintain our key values and ensure that our pieces are being reclaimed and up-cycled right down to the smallest details; even our wall hangers are made from tin can ring pulls! We believe beauty of art is in its uniqueness and so it is our aim that nobody will have the same Tilly Rose piece twice, just as there are never two identical pieces of drifted wood. We may not know the origins of our raw materials (and in fact the curiosity of their unknown journeys only adds to the character of each piece), but finding them a new home is what we like to do most.
It seems that there are many people who also share our love for wood and the creation of art from used, damaged and reclaimed materials. We feel very lucky to have grown from simply a girl painting on a wall by the beach to a business selling internationally, and a lot of that has been simply word of mouth, and more recently the power of social media and the online selling site etsy. By taking Tilly Rose online we have been able to reach a wider audience and share our unique designs, that in-keeping with our humble beginnings, are always personal and custom-made for every buyer.
As we continue to grow we are determined to remember where we came from ..... Tilly Rose Designs... Off the wall.
