Ann Smyth Stained Glass

From my 18th century studio located on the beautiful shores of Strangford Lough, I design and create stained glass for churches, public buildings and private collections.

In addition to my large architectural pieces, I also create small pieces of stained glass art enabling everyone to enjoy the magic of this ancient art form in their own home.

Using the same techniques as my stained glass pieces I also create unique pieces of jewellery. Making jewellery was not a conscious decision but rather something that evolved naturally.

Sweeping the floor of my studio one evening after a busy day I found a very beautiful, and very dead, butterfly. It was so beautiful and so perfect I couldn't bear to throw it out so I decided to preserve it in glass like the ancient tradition of preserving relics in reliquaries. This then led on to doing the same thing with other beautiful things I found, like tiny feathers and flowers. And so my "Nature's Reliquaries" collection was born.

I draw inspiration from my traditional training and love of medieval stained glass and also from the beautiful countryside that surrounds me which is steeped in history, myth and folklore. I then add a contemporary twist to create pieces that are both unique and timeless.

I love how the manipulation of light has such a profound effect on the senses and how sunlight hitting a carefully placed crystal or bevel has the ability to awaken the inner child in all of us.

Allow me to introduce Gus. When he is not "rearranging" items as I photograph them, his main role is listening to all my creative ideas, never disagreeing and providing lots of love and encouragement at the end of a busy day.
