I can’t say enough good things about this seller! Not only is she a super talented person but she’s SO NICE!!!! She was just as excited about my project as me and got completely on board with the brief I gave her! Not only that but (ohhhh my gosh!) she made a unicorn horn headband (in addition to a Mr Toad, Badger, Ratty, Moley and a Big Bad Wolf mask, paws and tail!!!) as a gesture for the commission! What was even more outstanding was that for a complementary gesture the unicorn headband was the most stunning interpretation I’ve ever seen of one! The masks themselves were mind blowing and when everyone saw them on Christmas morning everyone was really appreciative of their beauty. I would leave 100 stars if I could! I will definitely work with this seller again. Very impressed! Well done!

This is not just a mask - it really is a piece of art. I ordered it for a fancy-dress event but now it is hanging on my wall.
I received so many comments and compliments - it was a stand out piece and a triumph.
A truly precious piece I will treasure forever!

About

Straight out the English woods. Maker of enchanted things.....

I'm Mary Jones Obaseki and I'm AnotherEarthling, based at Studios in Camden, north London. My work includes themes of nature, folklore, wildness and theatre.
I work predominantly with the technique of needle felting also known as dry felting which is a contemporary form of the ancient traditional craft of felt making .I create animal sculpture and animal character masks from locally sourced, pure, raw, rare breed wools and plant fibres using the needle felting technique. This process makes solid durable forms with an incredibly lifelike texture and appearance.
All the masks are lovingly handcrafted to order from an original design, needle felted ‘pelts’ are attached to a high quality formed card base, these are then shaped and worked to create the individual character of each creature. Elastic and satin ribbon fastenings mean they fit snugly and securely to any face. They are ideal for masquerade balls, themed weddings, theatre productions, festivals, carnival, parties, wild dress up and much more. They can be worn on the face or high on the forehead as a headdress…With over 50 species in the repertoire please contact me if there is an animal you love that is not yet listed and I will begin creating.
Felt making is one of the oldest known fibre crafts and hugely labour intensive. For thousands of years peoples have been making clothes, blankets, beds and yurt coverings from a wet wool felting process. That process involves laying down (traditionally wool) fibres in alternate directions and applying hot water and soap, the mix is then agitated and the fibres begin to lock together, the more its agitated the denser the textile produced. While I employ the wet felting technique I mainly use the more contemporary dry felting technique. This is no less labour intensive but gives the artist the scope to make 3D forms and structures. No water or soap is used in this craft, just barbed felting needles which are inserted repeatedly “knitting” the tiny unseen scales of the fibre together. Felting needles were first used in industry in the 1950s when large machines fitted with thousands of needles began to produce non woven fibres. It is thought that the first artistic expression of the craft began when in the 1980’s Eleanor Stanwood began using a single needle and developed the craft of needle felting. Using this technique the artist can sculpt, adding and taking away without affecting the finish. I am one of a growing number of contemporary artists and crafters who are working with the process creating alternative and eclectic work from this ancient material.
