Exploring my imagination

Sometimes I describe myself as a Jack of all trades, because I have many interests and enthusiasms. However that's not being quite fair to myself, because the way you end the expression "Jack of all trades" is with "master of none" and I often achieve results that please me greatly. Better still, friends, family and others are often delighted too. So I like to share my skills with the world in general, and maybe earn some money along the way.

My key attribute is my imagination: my ability to see connections, to take inspiration from what I see around me and to use that to create something interesting. While I have a general training - degree in biology, work experience including admin and teaching, the experience of raising my own children and running my own household - I have learned many skills along the way, including using colour and turning unwanted items into something useful.

In 2012 we (my husband Alec and I) moved to Clevedon. I've worked as a freelance writer since then, while helping Alec run a small scale Bed and Breakfast from our home. In my spare time I've been exploring photography, watercolour painting, renovating furniture and knitting.

I opened my Etsy shop in 2014 selling some of my photographs, but never really focused on promoting my shop, so I closed it for a while. Recently I expanded on my knitting by designing my own neck-warmers/infintity scarves/cowls. I call them cache-cous - I think that's French for "hide-neck" and like having a cache-cou collection - but you can call them what you will! They also serve as improvised hats/ear warmers, so picking the right name for them is tough!

The collection developed quite organically. I made one for myself and one for Alec, and we loved them so much that I gifted some to family and friends. My daughter is an artist working in France, and she immediately fell in love with hers as wearing it kept her warm and cosy while sitting for several hours focused on her work. Other friends who live a very outdoors life in Cornwall loved theirs and found they fit perfectly into a jacket when you are out walking in chilly weather. So I bought some more yarn in colours I like and set about making a variety of neck warmers to fill my shop.

I knit them on large needles, with a twisted stocking stitch and either two or three different coloured yarns mixed together to give a stretchy, stylish and comfortable result. Although I started by having a range of colours I like with a view to having a range with three or four colour combos, I find it much more interesting to select different colours each time I knit, creating neck warmers that are unique.

So now I've relaunched my shop and will be adding products over the coming weeks. I'm looking forward to hearing more feedback, and to seeing where my imagination takes me next!

I'm self employed and have lived in Clevedon, North Somerset since 2012. It's a beautiful place to live and work and has inspired me to extend my skills in photography, writing and crafts of all sorts. Currently knitting is my enthusiasm.

Alec has done everything - managed duty free at Heathrow, managed an airport in Australia, run his own cleaning business, sold terracotta pots... He's the man who listens to all my ideas and lets me know what he thinks. Always worth listening to!
