Origin Story

About Me
I'm a 30-something UK Illustration graduate with a piece of pencil lead embedded in my little finger and a tattoo on my palm from an "incident" with a sharp pen. Hopefully one day these will give me magical art superpowers in much the same way that the spider created Spiderman. Superpowers so far include the ability to write backwards (mirrored), reciting the alphabet backwards, never forgetting a birthday, climbing Kilimanjaro, and being unbeatable at Mario Kart. Weaknesses include spiders, and complete lack of self restraint when it comes to food. I like food, animals, plants, The Sims, quirky fashion and decor, true crime, and art. I live in South Wales with my partner Matt and our rescue dog The Roo. She/her.

The History of the Business
After graduation I spent a couple of years selling a range of handmade items at markets. I found the most enjoyment and success out of the jewellery designs I could create from shrink plastic, but I had scars on my hands from where the scissors would rub, and burns on my fingers from too many late nights shrinking the pieces in my parents' oven.
I decided to invest a few hundred pounds in some laser cut pieces printed with my drawings, and launched on Etsy in late 2014. A year later I took the plunge and ordered my own laser cutter, and moved from my parents' kitchen to the living room, covering the floor with wooden silhouettes and hand-painting every piece into the night.
Another year and I blew my savings on a flatbed printer. My ever-patient parents sold the dining room table to make room for The Beast, which only just fit through the front door of our house. No more hand-painting, I could print onto the wood instead! I underwent my first re-brand and launched as Birch Please.
Two and a half years later (summer 2019) I was buying a house with my own studio room; a dream of mine. I joke that I can never move again, because getting my machines out of one house and into another was not an experience I'd ever look forward to repeating!
2020 hit like a brick and for the first time in a long time, I found myself with time to think. A lot of soul searching and growing self awareness leads us to...
January 2021, when I'm writing this, in the midst of a second re-brand, to Chesca the Illustrator.

The Future of the Business
From now on, I will make my own happiness a priority, and stop trying to work myself into an early grave. I will create art for art's sake, not just for jewellery designs. I will allow myself the freedom to experiment with more materials, more methods, more styles, more product types. I will work on letting go of my unrealistically high expectations of myself, and just allow myself to enjoy creating again.
I'm once again excited for what the future of my business holds.

Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:

Returns and exchange details
I will not accept returns on earrings for hygiene reasons, unless they are faulty or incorrect.

Refunds, or exchanges, will be given upon receipt of the returned as-new item. I will not cover your postage to return the items unless there has been an error on my part; this will be your responsibility. The refund will be for the item price only, not the shipping.
Orders are dispatched on Mondays and Thursdays. If I am working late into the night you may get your dispatch notification the following day.

UK orders are sent by Royal Mail 1st Class, large letter.
This is estimated to arrive within 1-3 business days.


Non-UK orders are sent by Royal Mail International Standard.
This is estimated to arrive in approx 5-10 business days.

:: M.I.A Packages ::

Customs, Christmas, adverse weather, global pandemics, and bad luck can all delay a parcel. Please be patient, and wait 2 weeks in the UK or 6 weeks for the rest of the world before assuming your item is lost.

If you still haven't had anything arrive within those times, contact me and upon confirmation of your delivery address I will send out a replacement.

There may be customs charges on international orders - you will have to check the regulations of your own country. I am not responsible for these.
Additional policies and FAQs
It is the responsibility of the customer to provide a full and correct address. If you notice you have provided an incorrect or out of date address please contact me before I have dispatched your item so I can send it to the right place.

Again, it is the responsibility of YOU the customer to provide a full and complete shipping address. This is the address you give ETSY, not necessarily your PayPal address. Items posted to an outdated or incomplete address will NOT be refunded or replaced.
TLDR:- Your information is provided to me through Etsy; I do not personally store your data anywhere else, physically or digitally. I will never share your information with any third party (beyond Etsy, delivery service providers, or legal obligation). If you wish to sign up to my mailing list I will require your express consent, which can be revoked at any time.


I will only ever process or store data which is 100% required to carry out my services - sending you beautiful jewellery. Your data is passed to me through Etsy. This includes:

- Your name
- Your delivery address
- Anything you may choose add in the Note to Seller section at check out or in direct messages, such as custom chain length requests or other instructions.

I will only share your data with people I can't fulfil your order without, namely Etsy and Royal Mail.

Once our transaction is complete I will only ever use your information to resolve disputes or comply with any necessary regulations or legal obligation. After four years, it will be deleted.

I would need your express consent to send you any marketing materials (and honestly I don't think I have the energy for a mailing list anyway! Ain't nobody got time for that.) and this consent could be revoked at any time.

In certain areas, such as the EU, you have the right to:

· withdraw your consent to me having your data
· request a copy of your data I have access to
· ask me to edit the information I have about you
· request the deletion of your data once our contract (sending you your purchase) is completed. This is best done directly through Etsy, as I have no control over what Etsy keeps - only access to it!
· object to use of your data for anything that isn’t related to fulfilling your order

My name is Fran Knight, and I am Keeper Of The Data for Birch Please. I do everything else too, but apparently that's not important. I do not actually physically or digitally store your data anywhere - I only have access to it within Etsy.

Frequently asked questions
Do you do custom designs?

The short answer is no - I already have a huge list of my own designs I want to work on. However, I do make a note of all requests and if it's something I get a lot of interest in or something I would like to make anyway, it will be added to the list!

Can I have a longer/shorter chain?

Yes, you can! Just pop a note in the Note to Seller section at checkout telling me what length you would like and I will happily make it! There is no extra charge for this. I can also provide silver plated chain upon request!

Please, please remember to tell me what length you would like, even if it's just an estimate. Don't just say "longer" and make me guess. The temptation to send a chain 3 metres long just to prove a point may one day be too great to ignore!

Wholesale availability

I am afraid due to a series of bad experiences, I have decided to suspend wholesale availability. I am currently unsure if I will ever bring it back. Sorry if that's a disappointment.
