About

BaNyabo - empowering women in Busembatia

Ba Nyabo means women in Luganda, a Ugandan dialect.

WIL Uganda - Women In Leadership - has been working in the rural village of Busembatia since June 2014. Our aim is to empower women and girls with the skills and confidence to lift them from poverty and become leaders and decision-makers in their communities.

Towards this objective we set up a sustainable income project for ladies of the village. Since July 2015 women on the WIL Uganda community crafts project have been learning how to intricately roll pieces of recycled paper into beautiful handmade beads. Their hard work, dedication and care have consistently been producing unique collections of handmade jewellery.

- Jane, one of the original participants on our crafts programme: "I left school at 15 years old and was married at 16. I now have four children and no job. On the crafts programme I hope to learn a new skill and gain friends. I would like to make money so that I can help my children." -

Since then the reach of our project has grown as our original class for women has doubled in size and we have established crafts classes for an additional 60 girls across 3 schools.

Each necklace encompasses hours of delicate craftsmanship and each is absolutely unique. We think that this is part of what makes them so special.

100% of the proceeds of sale go towards providing a sustainable income for women and girls in Busembatia.

This means that when you make a purchase you know that you are having a direct impact on a marginalized woman’s life, giving her the opportunity to support her family.

One participant, Irene, has made enough money through Ba Nyabo to be able to send her daughter to school. It is results like this that make our project so worthwhile.

We really hope you enjoy the beautiful handicraft of our skilled women and girls, and are inspired to help us provide a brighter future for the women of Uganda.
