About

Children's wear with a European take

I’m a cosmopolitan by nature. I love travelling and digging deep into my cultural surroundings. I’ve spent time living in the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany and have travelled throughout Central and Eastern Europe, working as an artist, teacher and performer. One of the things I loved about Germany and Northern Europe is their attitude towards children, which filters down into everything from school curriculum, to playground design ...and of course clothing! I fell in love with the bright colours and playful designs , the comfortable cuts and soft fabrics that are so abundant in Germany and Scandinavia, kids’ clothes that are fun and practical, easy to care for and really let kids be kids!

When I moved back ‘home’ to the UK, pregnant with my first child I was so disappointed at the lack of variety in mainstream British children's clothing. The high streets were saturated with pale pastel colour-coded pink and blue baby wear. I didn’t want to dress my little girl in pink – she didn’t even know who or what she was – no, I wanted her to be every colour of the rainbow and to choose for herself what she liked! (ironically she went through her own pink phase, like most 3-year-olds, but that was her choice). So I started sourcing my own fabrics – mostly from Germany – and making my own kids’ clothes.

I started my shop, Babaloola, in 2012 as a stall on Totnes Market, when my first daughter was 9 months old. I teamed up with another mum to form a WAHM collective and we used to have our babies with us in a travel cot at the stall. Initially I made knitwear, slings and baby toys, but things really changed when I introduced slouch pants to my range: comfortable, baggy, fit over cloth nappies and cover baby’s ankles even when in a sling… and they last for ever! - both my kids have worn each size for over 2 years!...And in an array of beautiful, bright, organic cotton stretch fabrics.

After that I started introducing other children’s clothes, and in 2017 I took the decision to phase out all non-organic fabrics and become an Eco brand. Now all products are organic, unless otherwise stated. The big exception is my cloth books, which it will take some time to switch over to organic fabrics.

In 2017 I ran into legal difficulties over a trademark dispute and in April 2018 I changed my company name to Pieni Ankka (which means “Little Duck” in Finnish – a homage to the Scandi style I love so much).

So I hope you enjoy my collection of fun and vibrant designs, geared primarily to the 0-6 year age range (although my range is expanding) – and occasionally for adults too! Each piece is lovingly handmade to your choice of size and fabric. I welcome your feedback and I’m always looking for new ideas to incorporate into my collections.
