I am an indie fibre business selling hand dyed spinning fiber from my home on the top of a hill in Mid Wales, UK! I also card batts from Haunui NZ Wool and sell dyed fleeces from my flock of Gotland x sheep

My colours are mostly muted, restful shades and tones due to the overdyeing of natural coloured base fibres with the occasionally punchy colour to jazz things up!

About

A fibre business based in beautiful Mid Wales - a land of woollen textiles and inspiration!

Ever since I can remember I've made things. I grew up in a family where making things we wanted or needed was part of daily life. For me, creativity is an essential part of every day, as natural to me as breathing or sleeping and just as important for health and wellbeing.

From a young age I became especially fascinated by the textures and colours of textiles and spent a lot of time sewing and creating things from fabric. My other love was animals and so eventually when my parents and I moved to a smallholding in Mid Wales our menagerie increased to include a flock of sheep.
In 2003 I left my job as a veterinary nurse and took a more active role in the running of the farm and this included taking over the flock of sheep. This in turn lead me to learn to spin in 2006 and I sold our commercial flock and bought in some Gotland sheep. These became the basis of my current small coloured fibre flock who are bred and crossbred exclusively for their fleeces. My sheep all have names and individual personalities and come when called for a cuddle and scratch! The flock includes Gotland, Black Welsh Mountain, Black Bluefaced Leicester, Leicester Long wool and Charollais genes which makes for an interesting mix of fibre types and the colours range from silver white through every shade of grey to pure black with a few brown fleeces too.

The dyed fleeces from these sheep form the basis for my Etsy business and I've expanded the shop range to include bought in fibres which I dye to complement the fibre I produce here on our farm in Wales.

I love colour and texture and never tire of playing with them to create new possibilities for spinning, weaving, knitting and felting - there are never enough hours in the day to experiment with all the things I want to!
I am inspired mostly by the natural world and am drawn to the soft colour combinations and textures that can be found there. I'm also inspired by literature and stories from the past as well as the design influences from my family and childhood.

I love to create things that are functional and, I hope, beautiful and hope that the fibres I sell will help you to do the same.

Welcome to BarberBlackSheep!

Please note that colours appear differently on different computer screens. I do my best to make sure that the colours in photos are as close to the original fibre as possible.
I live and work in rural Mid-Wales and share my home with my pet cats and dogs. The animals are not permitted in my fibre working areas, but can't guarantee no stray hairs. Ours is a non-smoking household.

My own fleeces come from my small flock of sheep kept specifically for spinning fibre. They are handled with respect and are treated as pets and friends rather than utility animals. I endeavour to produce the best quality fibre I can throughout the whole year it is growing on the animal, taking into account the nutrition, health, housing and shearing of each animal. I skirt all my fleece heavily and discard any fibre that isn't suitable for spinning and keep the fleeces as clean and clear of vegetable matter as possible. I cannot guarantee however that there will be no VM or cotting of fibres, wherever I see less than top quality fibres I remove them but this is a 100% natural product that spends all it's growing season out of doors in our wonderful Welsh weather! I do not coat any of my sheep and I do not treat them with chemicals unless vital for the animals health and only after the sheep has been sheared and the fleece removed to ensure as natural a product as possible.

My fibres are hand-dyed using acid dyes. I try to exhaust the dye bath to ensure there is no wastage of dye, and rinse fibres thoroughly. However there may be a small amount of bleeding when you first wash your spun yarn, especially in the case of dyed fleece due to the method I use for dyeing these.
I carefully wash fleeces by hand but avoid stripping all the natural oils from it entirely so as to leave a pleasant feel to the fibre.
Some dye molecules can adhere to the small amount of lanolin left behind and whilst on most fibre this is not noticeable, occasionally with deep colours it can leave a trace of colour on your fingers whilst spinning. This is natural and not a fault. Hand wash your finished yarn carefully with hot water and detergent and the last traces of dye will be removed.

All my fibres are suitable for handwashing only. Gotland fibre in particular needs careful washing as it felts readily.

Where possible I try to recycle packaging.

Payment
All purchases to be paid via Paypal.
I am unable to offer any other form of payment at this time.

You can cancel your order at any time before the order has been posted out, please contact me to arrange this. Once your order has been posted I won't be able to refund you until the item is returned to me. In this situation the refund will be less the amount paid for postage.
Shipping
I endeavour to post all orders out within as short as time as possible but as I live in a rural area this means that I cannot get to the post office every day. I aim to dispatch within 3 business days of receiving an order but hopefully less. At the moment the days I usually ship on are Mondays and Thursdays due to the days I have to go into town but if you urgently need a parcel then convo me and I will do my best to accommodate your request.

All UK orders are sent out 2nd class, all overseas orders sent out International Standard Service.

Please allow up to 15 working days for UK mail from dispatch for an item to arrive, 20 working days for European mail, 25 working days for all other international mail.
Your parcel should arrive well within this time but I can't report an item as missing with Royal Mail until after these periods of time have elapsed.

If it remains missing after this time I will do my best to replace your order or will offer you a refund.

International orders over a certain value may be charged customs fees. Any such fees that the items incur are at the buyers expense and responsibility.

Please check that what you are purchasing will be allowed through customs in your country, if items are returned to me due to being refused by customs I will refund the cost of the item, but not the shipping fees.
I mark all parcels as containing "wool" and do not ship raw fleece to any country due to the paperwork involved, only washed/and or dyed fleece and fibre. However, please check your countries regulations on importing washed fleece before you purchase this item. I would hate for you to miss out on your purchase - or for my lovely sheep's fleece to be destroyed at the point of entry!

I print out the invoice generated by Etsy to use as your shipping address. Please make sure this address is correct. If you need it sent to another address please send me a message at the time of purchasing.
If the item is returned to me undelivered as a result of you incorrectly entering your shipping address on your order I am able to arrange to re-post it to you. However the cost of the second lot of shipping must be borne by the customer.
Refunds and Exchanges
Items are sold as seen. All computer screens show different colours, I do my very best to represent what the actual fibre looks like but please allow for slight variation in colour.
I want you to be happy with your order, please make sure you read the item description before purchasing.

If you are not happy with your item I will accept returns, but at the buyers expense, unless the item is in some way faulty. Refunds will not be processed until the item is returned to me, I recommend you use a form of delivery that requires a signature for your own peace of mind. If you wish to return your item you must contact me within 7 days of receiving your item. In the case of non-faulty or non- damaged items I will only refund the actual cost of your order, not the price paid for postage.

If an item arrives damaged I will refund, or replace the damaged part of your order.
Additional policies and FAQs
If you wish for me to custom dye or create something for you then feel free to contact me with your ideas. I may not be able to do this but I will always consider any reasonable request and work with you to achieve what you have in mind.
If you wish to purchase a larger amount of items than is listed in the shop you are welcome to contact me to discuss whether I am able to supply this or order in/create items to fulfil you requirements.

I am unable to reserve listed items, once an item is in the shop it is sold on a first come, first served basis as this is the fairest outcome for all parties.
Please don't ask me to reserve items in my shop as I don't want to offend anyone by having to say no.

I am sometimes asked how I create my blends or recipes or what certain items consist of. Whilst I recognise that mostly this is simply from genuine interest in the item or my methods, I reserve the right to keep the actual recipes or colours I develop private.
My blends/dyes are carefully designed and tested and are my intellectual property. I am happy to discuss my products in general terms but please don't be offended if I chose to withhold certain personal information to safeguard the work I have invested in them.
