Portraits peppered with personality!

I have over 30 years experience working as an artist. Much of that time was spent in London & Bristol, working in the wonderful world of puppet animation, making sets and props for TV shows such as 'Fireman Sam'...
Exciting days! Tight deadlines whilst creating miniature worlds with a multitude of materials and learning invaluable moulding and casting skills.

I moved to Devon in 2004, seeking new inspiration from the countryside and sea and it was a throw-away remark from my partner in 2013 that set me on my current exciting journey...

'Why don't you do some sculpture for yourself?'

That was a 'light bulb' moment, as I realised all my work to date has been for other people and not for me. I sat down with a big mug of tea and did some long hard thinking... I've always been intrigued by faces and thus began my new artistic venture: portrait sculpting.

I sculpt both human and animal heads in clay, mould them in rubber and then cast in resin. Often combining other materials such as iron, jute and reclaimed metal, my sculptures have a porosity and sense of fragility.

Maybe its my past career in puppet animation that influences me, but I do gravitate towards theatricality and experimentation, often provoking quirky bold compositions.

I was thrilled to exhibit at The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition in 2019, and also appeared on Grayson Perry's Art Club last year on C4, with my sculpture of Ena Sharples from Coronation Street!

Lately, I've also enjoyed sketching and painting portraits, in addition to sculpting them.
