I pledge to live and buy by that famous William Morris quote!

As I fill my shop with handmade fabric flower covered jewellery, craft supplies and home decor items, I frequently have that most famous of William Morris quotes in my head. 'Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful'

I had wanted to go it alone for a long time but hadn't quite had the courage to make that leap of faith. Then my hand was forced when my day job as a jewellery project designer became unworkable. The job, home and family balancing act was starting to topple and I knew I had to make a change. It was now or never! Beaded jewellery making had become second nature to me, so all the while I had been producing these items for somebody else I had a hundred and one plans hatching in my head for things I would make.

It all started with the hat pincushions. The pincushion is such a lovely thing and as I did my product research I realised that, strangely, there weren't many hat shaped ones around. So I made my very first one. When it was complete I proudly showed the little pink miniature hat to my husband. He looked at me like I had lost my marbles. 'Won't that be a bit painful?' he asked, 'Wearing a pincushion on your head?' Funnily enough, since then, I have mainly kept my grand schemes to myself until I am ready to show them to a more, shall we say, discerning audience! Anyway, as the hat pincushions proved popular (with sewing fans rather than people trying to wear them I presume) I branched out into handbag pincushions.

After a few months somebody who visited my Facebook page said 'I too am a keen lover of flowers'. It took somebody else to point out to me that I had this key theme running through my designs! They are everywhere in my work. How could I not have noticed? Well, this set me thinking again. I was almost over my 'bead weariness' after using them on a daily basis for so long. I started dipping my toe in the jewellery water again. I liked the idea of jewellery but wanted to break away from the bead format, which is a pretty saturated market anyway. I decided by this point that my products had developed a Crafty Jo Designs 'look' and I wanted to carry on that look throughout. The natural course to take was to incorporate felt and fabric into my designs. I tried it first with my poppy necklaces and they went down a storm. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Crafty Jo arsenal has increased to include a whole range of items, but the pincushions still hold a special place in my heart. I think it is because they seem to sum up everything about that famous line from Mr Morris. They are, after all, rather beautiful and extremely useful!
