Mesmorized, Dazzled, Beguiled By The Art Of Long Ago Illustrations
That's a pithy opening statement, yes? But true. I can't remember a time when illustration hasn't held me in it's spell. I love graphics of all kinds, from diner place mats, matchbooks, ads in Life Magazine, Erte fashion collections, movie star cigarette cards, Old Maid playing decks, scenic postcards, and above all, fantastical children's picture books. In all the varying 'professions' I've held, all contained some tie with vintage illustration. Even if peripherally. I had a business for several years that combined my love of charms and illustration--Picture Perfect Designs. I made pins, earrings, necklaces and sold at juried craft shows. And I found online hoards of like minded illustration lovers and began to share my abundance of collected paper ephemera. After a while, I caught on--I could sell these gorgeous pieces as digital art! D and I pooled our extensive collections, both physical and digital, and opened the shop.
Our output is rigorously scrutinized for high quality. We print and reprint, if need be, checking for faults, creases, blurriness, any kind of detraction from the image. The printing comes AFTER the illustration is scanned, color corrected, and worked on to remove any imperfections. Imperfections, such as? Creases, tears, pencil lines, writing, child's coloring, splotches, water damage, fraying, paper chips, rubbing of image, scratches, fading, aged yellowing, and many more things that the buyer may notice. In other words, the print you receive should be as close to the original as possible. Are we successful 100 per cent of the time? We hope so, but if not, it's by accident an image we have for sale is not up to par--when we OK'd it, we believed it was of a superior quality.
We use our collections of paper illustrations, collections of friends, and found images--but all must be of superior artistry to qualify as sellable. A great deal of our pieces are from first edition books, original pieces of sheet music, postcards, greeting cards, bridge tallies, etc., and this accounts for the clarity of an image. I really do sweat over whether an image is up to par, lol, before adding it to the store--many a rejected printout lays upon my cluttered workroom floor!
When I am walking through an antique/collectibles mall and spot an obscure book with outstanding illustrations, the elation is indescribable. Knowing that these wonderful old pieces people may not have laid eyes upon for decades and decades will be seen now by customers and browsers alike gives me a satisfaction like no other. These artists work live on via this new fangled, or not so new now, lol, thing called the internet and it is a privilege to be someone who reverently passes pictures on to new generations to use for crafts, artworks, jewelry and anything one can dream of.
