I like to make pieces which are unusual, tactile and pleasing to the eye. Texture fascinates me, so in my eyes I feel I have made an interesting piece if I want to instinctively reach out to grab and touch it.

I have been practicing my craft for 30 years in the beautiful surroundings of South Cumbria in the United Kingdom, a place which provides vast inspiration for my work from the surrounding coastland to the hills and valleys of our local National Park.

Mainland UK postage is free of charge. For International postage charges, please contact me for a quote if not already indicated on the listing. Your order will be carefully packed using bio-degradable or recyclable materials inside a cardboard box which will be clearly labelled FRAGILE for safe delivery.

Sculptural ceramics are created using hand-building techniques by applying surface decoration and playing with form to produce handmade, distinctive and individual pieces. Each piece of work is unique because of the many variables within the making process. Between each stage in the process, all pieces are sanded to ensure a professional finish is achieved. It takes about four weeks to make a piece of work, longer if it is a larger piece or if the detail is quite intricate.

I enjoy working with porcelain due to the purity and plasticity of the clay which on the flip side can also cause issues for the ceramicist.

Other pieces of my work are made with stoneware clay which is fired in a kiln temperature of 1260 degrees Celsius to ensure the glazes are bonded onto the ceramic body to provide additional strength and decoration.

A reduction firing is used for my pieces made from crank clay when using a Japanese technique called Raku. This process is very exciting but precarious as you remove your pieces while still hot from the gas kiln, plunging them into combustible material and finally water.

I hope you will agree that my pieces would make a beautiful gift for the people who matter in your life or may provide the finishing touch to your home.

Lightly dust or sponge with a damp cloth to keep items clean. Each piece is made from stoneware or porcelain clay which means it has been fired to a high temperature and is very strong. My work is non-functional pottery and therefore should not be placed in a dishwasher.
