About

Embroidery and dollhouses together - what could be better?!

Embroidery has always been my passion – I was embroidering when I was four – and dollhouse miniatures have fascinated me for almost as long, so it’s great that I can combine the two interests in my miniature needlepoint kit business. The business was begun in 1996, after I left ‘real work’ to concentrate on what I loved doing. I first wrote a book, ‘Miniature Needlepoint Carpets’, published by Guild of Master Craftsmen (now out of print), which featured 25 of my miniature needlepoint carpet designs for 18 count canvas, which helped to get me known when I was first getting my business off the ground.

Over the next few years, I expanded the range of miniature needlepoint kits to include cushions, footstools, Christmas stockings, needlework stands (tapestry frames), firescreens, wallhangings, teacosies, tray cloths, handbags, dining chairs……everything you could think of for a one inch to one foot dollhouse. I never seem to run out of ideas – there’s always more that I can design for adult collectors’ dollhouses!

I research for new products mainly by using my extensive collection of books on antique needlework. Most ‘full-size’ embroidered items for the home can be made in twelfth scale suitable for a dollhouse, if they are carefully thought through. I spend a lot of time planning how stitchers will be able to make the kits up – I want everyone to have a good ‘stitching experience’ when they buy from me – not just the buying process itself, but the stitching up of the kit too. I love miniature needlepoint, and I want you to, as well!

One of the main features of my kits is that any ‘special component’ that you need to complete the kit is included – so, the bellpull kits include a specially designed metal bellpull end; the dining chair kits feature the wooden parts to make the chair (even the seat pad is included in that kit!), and so on. I source these components from all over the world, and commission them specially, if necessary.

It's no problem if you've never done mini stitching before. There are dollhouse needlepoint kits suitable for complete beginners, as well as ones for those who have been doing needlepoint for years. Some of the kits are to be stitched on 18 count canvas (such as the dollhouse carpets); some on 22 count canvas (such as the dollhouse cushions – these are good projects for beginners, as they are quick to complete). I also use 28 count evenweave for the dollhouse sampler kits and round footstool kits, and then 32 count silk gauze for kits such as the firescreens, bellpulls, dining chairs, and so on. 40 count silk gauze is used for some of the handbags, and the needlework stand kits. So, hopefully, there is something for every level of stitcher.

I love to write about my embroidery, too – I have had a Wordpress blog since 2009, where I talk about what I am stitching at the moment; both full-size – such as stumpwork, cross stitch, beadwork - and dollhouse scale, such as the latest miniature needlepoint project that is to be launched, miniatures that I have come across by other miniature artisans, and so on. I also write the occasional book review, as I love books.

I am on Facebook, so follow the link below to see what I’m talking about on there at the moment! I find it quite addictive…..

As embroidery and dollhouse miniatures are such ‘visual’ hobbies, I have become keen on Pinterest, and have a growing Pinterest presence! I have boards for various kinds of embroidery and needlearts – cross stitch alphabets, Lavender and Lace Celtic Ladies, stumpwork, patchwork and quilting. I also collect images on Pinterest of dollhouse buildings, and miniatures of all kinds. I particularly love collecting images of miniature nursery items, as I am making a dollhouse scale toy shop at the moment, and use Pinterest to collect together my ‘wishlist ideas’ for stocking the shop with tiny toys.

The dollhouse shop is my second dollhouse – my first one is a twelfth scale Georgian town house, which I bought in 1983, and has been an inspiration for new miniature needlepoint items for my business several times. For instance, the handbag kits came about because I needed something to make the drawing room in my dollhouse look more ‘lived in’, and I thought that a handbag left casually on a chair would convey the right idea.

I think it is important for people to spend time on hobbies – in today’s world, where everyone seems to be in such a hurry, and ‘free time’ seems to be so hard to come by, it is good for our health to retreat into a world of relaxation and fun from time to time. Embroidery is a great hobby to help you unwind. Miniature needlepoint is something that can be done by anyone, with just a little practice, and it’s very portable, too - ideal for when you are travelling.

Enjoy looking through my Etsy shop, and if there’s anything you need to ask, just convo me.

I really want you to have a good 'shopping experience' when you buy from me! Read through my Policies on this page, and if you need any further information, please don't hesitate to convo me.

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy Gift Cards and Etsy Credits
Returns and exchanges
I gladly accept returns and exchanges
Contact me within: 14 days of delivery
Ship items back within: 30 days of delivery
I don't accept cancellations
But please contact me if you have any problems with your order.
If you are not happy with an item you receive (if it is faulty in some way), please send me an Etsy conversation so that I can help to resolve the issue.

I do not give refunds for goods without seeing the item to assess it. Sometimes this can be done by photos sent by Etsy conversation, and sometimes I need to physically see the item before making a decision, but the final decision is mine.

Items being returned must be packaged so as not to incur damage during transit. They must be sent by a trackable method - I cannot be held liable for items lost in transit back to me.

If you live outside the European Union, then you MUST tick the box on the Customs Label for 'Other', and add the phrase ‘Returned Goods’ clearly, as otherwise import taxes and collection fees would be charged to me. If I get charged these to receive your parcel back, then the full cost of that will be deducted from your refund.

Unless an item is faulty, or the wrong item was sent, the original postage cost to send the parcel to you will not be refunded. Also, unless an item is faulty or the wrong item was sent, you are responsible for return postage costs and insurance/tracking.

If, when you originally placed your order, you received discounted or free shipping due to the order value being above a certain level, and you then return one or more items for a refund which takes the order value for the items you are keeping below that level, then unless the item being returned was faulty or the wrong item was sent, the shipping cost that would have been charged for the items that you have kept will be deducted from your refund.
Payment
Please note that the shipping cost listed throughout my shop is a flat rate per order, not per item.

I take payments via Etsy Direct Checkout (including Etsy Gift Cards), and Paypal. If you have a Paypal account, you can use your card, Paypal balance, or bank account (if you have set up your Paypal account that way). If you don't have a Paypal account, you can still pay using the Paypal system, and then choose not to allow Paypal to open an account for you at the end of the transaction process.

I only ship items once the payment has been received in full.

You have the right to cancel your order at any time up to 14 working days from the day after receiving the goods, in line with EU Distance Selling Regulations. You may cancel, in writing, by convo or post to Janet Granger, Rose Cottage, Leek Road, Waterhouses, Staffordshire, ST10 3JS England. I guarantee to refund the full purchase price (but not the shipping cost) within 30 days of cancellation. Any such unwanted goods remain the property of Janet Granger Designs and must be returned to me at your own expense, unused and in perfect condition.
Shipping
I ship worldwide, within 1 to 3 business days (except in exceptional circumstances, when I will put a Shop Announcement up, giving the revised time frame). Everything shown in my Etsy shop is in stock.

UNITED KINGDOM: £1.95 flat rate per order (however many items you buy)
OVERSEAS (Outside of the United Kingdom): £4.50 flat rate per order (however many items you buy)

For UK destinations, I ship using Royal Mail Second Class, with items usually arriving between two to seven *working* days after being posted.

For non-UK destinations, I ship using Royal Mail International Standard Airmail. This is an economical and reliable, but not trackable, method. Please allow time for your parcel to be processed by Customs in your country - this varies between countries, but can be anything from a few days to several weeks. You are responsible for any Customs charges/Duties that may be payable.

Please note: Claims for damage in transit must be made within 3 days of receipt, with supporting visual evidence of the packaging and items.
