About

From Local Government to Jewellery Design

I have been making jewellery for over 10 years. I learned my craft at a local jewellery class, which I attended when my first child was a baby. I fell in love with beading there and then!

I started to make jewellery in my spare time and sold a few pieces to family, friends, & work colleagues. I then ventured into selling my designs online and opened my first Etsy shop in 2009. It took me a few months to make my first sale but I was thrilled!

Since that first sale, I have been gradually adding more and more of my pieces to my shop. I have made over 70 sales so far, which is not a great deal compared to some sellers. However, I have been juggling a part time job and two young children as well as making jewellery! I am pleased to say that every one of those sales has been a complete success.

I left my part time job in Local Government in February 2013 to improve my work / life balance. Since 2011, I have suffered from fibromyalgia, which is a chronic pain and fatigue condition. I was struggling to hold down a 9-5 job and also be a good wife and mother. My job was getting the best of me and I had no energy left for home or family. I had to make a drastic lifestyle change, so I took voluntary redundancy from my job.

I became self employed to better manage my health. I am now able to work when I can and then rest when I need to. Dolly Decades became an official business in June 2013. In addition to selling on Etsy, I also sell my pieces on eBay and in a number of local gift shops. My overall aims going forward are to increase my online inventory and expand the number of outside outlets where I sell my products.

Being self employed is quite daunting but the benefits most certainly outweigh the disadvantages. I am so pleased I made the lifestyle change for the sake of my wellbeing and my family.

Thank you for taking an interest in me and my work. X
