Life of a Jeweller

It all started in 1998. I moved up to the beautiful City of Edinburgh from a small town on Anglesey, North Wales where I grew up. Even though I loved living on the coast and was not really familiar with city life, I soon fell in love with Edinburgh.

I studied Jewellery & Silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art for the best part of four years, graduating in 2001 followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in 2002. It was here where I developed my own customised technique of fusion. This is where I arrange and overlap different shapes into repetitive patterns to create textured silver and gold sheets.
Inspiration came from repetition in nature and architectural shapes and patterns, and my work soon began to resemble elements of flora and fauna.

During my post graduate show and New Designers Exhibition in London, myself and the very talented Kaz Robertson were awarded £7000 from the Deutsche Bank Pyramid Awards to set up our workshop at Coburg House Studios in Leith, where we still are to this day.

Since then I have continued to develop and show my work at exhibitions and fairs such as the prestigious Goldsmiths Fair in London. I produce large one-off pieces for special exhibitions and smaller pieces which I sell on line and through galleries and shops.

My vocation as a florist for five years between 2006 and 2011 provided me with a plethora of shapes and textures to draw inspiration from. Not only had I learnt a new creative skill in the art of flower arranging, it also helped introduce new ideas, forms, and most importantly, colour into my designs.

My lovely studio at Coburg House I just wouldn't be without. This is where all the jewellery making happens. I also run wedding ring workshops from there, so I'm not always hidden away from the public! It is a fantastic place to work with so many other creatives running their own individual businesses and the best thing is, I can bring my wee Boston Terrier, Otis into work with me.

I now live in Musselburgh by the sea. It only takes twenty minutes to get to the studio and with just a short train journey to Edinburgh City Centre, I get the best of both worlds.

Care instructions

Place your jewellery in silver dip and leave for just a few seconds. Leave longer if badly tarnished. Then, rinse well with warm water. Using a soft toothbrush and fairy liquid, brush the silver all over. Rinse thoroughly and dry using a hair dryer. This will reduce any silver dip residue or water stain.

For pendants on snake chains or wire necklets, remove pendant from chain and follow instructions above. For the snake chain or necklet use a silver cloth and run the chain through the cloth with your fingers.

For any Donna Barry jewellery with semi precious stones or pearls, dip only the silver.
