Sara explains why our velvet vaginas aren't called velvet vulvas!
How a global Birth Information Project is funded by vaginas!
In 2013, author, speaker and researcher Dr Sara Wickham and her husband Chris decided to 'go it alone' and begin a truly independent birth information service, without ads, sponsorship or an institutional salary. (To find out more about that side of Sara's work or to sign up for our free updates, see www.sarawickham.com).
We set about crowdfunding and sold handmade hearts to create our Birth Information Project and fund the software needed to set up a free monthly newsletter.
Then we needed ongoing funding to keep it going. We noticed that people admired the velvet vaginas, birthkit purses and information pouches that Sara had created for use in her teaching, so she began to make some (often while flying around the world to speaking engagements or while sat in conferences listening to friends speak!) and we began to sell them on our bookstall.
More than six years on, the Birth Information Project is still going strong. Thousands of people in more than forty countries receive and rely on Sara's information and updates, and the software that underpins our free information service is still funded by the sale of Sara's handmade birth goodies.
Nowadays, we don't just sell Sara's handmade goodies at live events. Thanks to Chris' love of sending tiny parcels of love around the world, they are available worldwide, via Etsy. Sara makes everything but she still works full-time as a speaker and author and doesn't make in large quantities, so if there's something you're looking for, keep an eye on Sara's Instagram to see when she's sewing!
If Sara's work helps you, we would love it if you would buy something for yourself or a friend and help us keep the free side of our work going into the future. Absolutely every penny of profit goes towards the Birth Information Project, to which we give our time for free :-)
