Welcome to Middle Earth....

When I moved out of a perfectly civilised Welsh seaside village, and headed inland 40 miles and uphill by 900ft to live on a four-hundred year old smallholding in the Clocaenog Forest, it was indeed like moving to Middle Earth. Sensible heating was replaced by a coal furnace and a woodburner, it was nearly a year before we had running water, and our small herd of horses had a waterproof roof over their heads before we did. It was still pretty good here though, and we rapidly adopted distinctly old-fashioned ways of doing things....because in this environment, they worked better. Living through a winter high up in the isolation of the Welsh hills teaches you that things you make need to be functional, tough, and durable. We learned to build with stone and create solid wooden joints, bought hand made ironwork, and also got back into the habit of repairing and even making leather items that we needed. For me, it tended to be saddlebags or other bits of horse stuff--repairing reins or bridles, or making mecate straps and tool belts.

At the time I was running an equine feed business, but I slowly got disillusioned with the entire industry and decided enough was enough. My first idea was to go back to writing, but in between assignments, I found myself doing more and more leatherwork, firstly for things we needed, and later on, making things for other people. There's great satisfaction in making something with the same techniques and the same sorts of basic hand tools that have been used by craftsmen for hundreds of years. Everything made here is hand-cut, hand-sewn, and hand-finished. For me, it created a strong bond with the generations of people who lived in my house years ago--people who also worked with their hands in much the same way I do today.

A year on, and Elrohir appeared on Etsy for the first time-and was an instant success :) We quickly decided to specialise in making journals, since this was an area where leatherwork and art blended together and afforded plenty of opportunities for extravagant decoration. Latterly, we have begin to produce paper notebooks and inserts for our Travelers Notebooks, not least because we could never find the sorts of things we wanted for ourselves.

Everything made at Elrohir in some way reflects the landscape I live in. 2019 saw us move 250 miles away from Wales, exchanging the half-light of the Clocaenog Forest for the bleak hills and vast forests of the southern Scottish Uplands. It still feels like Middle Earth, particularly since our new workshop was built in the C16th and there is an actual castle next door. I hope our books take a little part of our ancient, wild, mysterious elvish environment to all the corners of the world.

Some are sensible, stylish and cool, and others are wildly decorative, some are both, and all reflect the richness and diversity of our the ancient place in which we live :)

Returns and exchange details

If you are in the UK or Europe and you really don't like an item when it arrives, then send it back to us using a tracked delivery method within 14 days--unused and in the condition we sent it. We will refund you the purchase price minus the shipping. If we shipped for free--we will subtract the actual price of the shipping from the refund.

We no longer accept non-European international returns due to the difficulties we have had with import taxes and other charges levied on us in the UK.

If an item is faulty on arrival please contact us, wherever you are in the world. We will repair, replace or refund faulty items but please talk to us before you send something back, especially if you are international, so we can decide on the best course of action. We will NOT accept an international return if it lands with a customs or import charge on it, and it will be returned to you by the Post Office :(

When we won't refund shipping:

It is absolutely fine to send things back if you don't like them (this hardly ever happens, mind you) but there are some things for which we won't refund your shipping:

1. If you didn't realise that top grain, vegetable tanned leather is a natural product. It will have minor but visible range marks, like faint scars, lines, variations in colour, marblings, and speckles. We use top quality leather from ethical sources, but we use ALL of our leather. We see the textures of the skin as an inherent part of the item--our stuff looks like proper leather, not like plastic or PU synthetics or highly processed leather. Of course, if you ask us, we can probably make you something that is totally smooth and featureless too, but you might as well just buy something synthetic and cheaper?

2. For colours that look different on your monitor than on our Mac Retina display. We try to describe colours accurately to avoid this, which is why we boringly call our colours 'dark pink' or 'pale green' rather than 'Mermaid Candy Sparkle' or 'Leaf Dream Drift' or that sort of thing :D

3. For minor variations in size or shape from the measurements on the listing.

4. If you can't envisage the size of an item from the two sets of measurements and the international paper sizing dimensions provided on each listing. I have every sympathy with this actually, but folks! Just get a tape measure out! It'll make your lives so much easier :D

When we won't refund at all:

Hardly ever--but if you manage to rip something in half, damage the finish by saturating it, or the item has been used in ways or conditions it wasn't designed for and shows signs of misuse (this includes rolling the leather to soften it or soaking it in unsuitable oils or conditioners--we recommend Tandy or Fiebings Carnauba wax and nothing else). We can probably advise you what to do about it but we cannot be responsible for those sorts of damages :(

You can pay me any way you want to, be it PayPal, Direct Checkout, or via bank transfer.

I would prefer to be paid within 3 days of purchase for a stock item--if it is going to take longer for whatever reason, do please let me know before you buy :)

We ship normal international orders out on Royal Mail Standard International, which has an insurance limit of £20. This will be the declared value on normal packages (see below for more details) so it is highly unlikely that this will incur any import taxes in most countries. There is no tracking (which is very expensive from the UK) but if an item doesn't turn up, we will replace it. Multiple purchases and very expensive orders we prefer to send tracked and insured, though please bear in mind that if you are not in the UK, you may have to pay additional customs duties and import taxes since we then have to declare the full value on the customs form (I don't think this has ever happened because nobody can read my appalling handwriting, but it is a possibility). You are responsible for paying these charges, not me. I'm no expert and can't advise you, I'm afraid! :(


We welcome custom orders. The process is this: we discuss an idea, and I will do drawings, and we will agree a design, a time frame, and a price. Payment for both item and shipping is due before I start work on the item.


If you change your mind before I have shipped a stock item, then we can cancel the order. We do ship pretty quickly though and I would ask you to choose carefully and not change your mind!

If you change your mind about a custom or made to order item, then you have seven days to cancel the order. After that, we consider work to have started--it will have been booked into our schedule and the leather and other things needed to complete the item will have been ordered and paid for, so we can't refund. We are sorry about this but late cancellations throw our schedules and finances into chaos and create a lot of extra admin work that we simply don't have time to do.

Bear in mind that we are a busy shop and we process a lot of orders from elsewhere--this is a business and a living not a hobby :D Our books are all hand made, hand stitched, and are not banged out on a mechanised production line, so the waiting list can be long--up to 8 weeks. This will be made clear on the listing, on your receipt when you order, and in any convos you have with me. We try to get things done well before the deadline but PLEASE be aware that the shipping estimate applies to YOU as well as the sixty other orders I have to make before I do yours :D

We aim to ship as soon as we can, and for ready to ship items, that is normally the next working day.

If you order a custom cover or inserts, THE PRODUCTION TIME AND ESTIMATED SHIPPING DATE WILL BE ON THE THE LISTING AND ON THE RECEIPT ETSY SENDS YOU WHEN YOU ORDER :D Currently we are turning away more work than we are taking on, and wait times are likely to be 8 weeks or so before we ship. Apparently this is character building and teaches patience (I can't even wait for a kettle to boil so I applaud your self control if you can manage this without emailing me at least twice in the hope that nagging will make me work faster. It wont, but it's always nice to hear from people anyway :D )


We post out Royal Mail First Class for the UK, or Standard Airmail for Europe and the rest of the world.

First class and standard airmail does not include a tracking number. Tracking from the UK costs more, and there is an option for tracking at checkout, so please choose it if you want your item tracked :)

Please be aware that the Royal Mail only insures parcels up to £20. If your item goes missing we will claim from the Royal Mail and make and send you a replacement even if it cost more than £20.

For very high-value items we will normally offer postage with tracking and insurance. Unfortunately this can be very pricey for shipping overseas, but we won't ship very expensive orders without insurance (and bear in mind the declared value for customs will be higher, so budget for possible import tax additions in this case).

We will try to find the cheapest and safest way to deliver to you :) If you ordered something, you WILL get it :D

Items that are returned to us undelivered: we will contact you to ask for confirmation of your address. We are happy to repost to you if you pay the actual cost of shipping, or we will refund (though we will deduct the inital shipping cost for international post).
